Possible alternate solution
Mark off each level of indentation with a different symbol. Except rotate the symbols you use so that the visual offset keeps working to any depth. Cheers, Ben

I'm almost afraid to say this
But this is one thing I think IWE's new forum software got right. Legal-style paragraph numbering, eg:
1 1.1 1.2 1.2.1 1.2.2 1.2.2.1 1.3 etc.
They have to do it because they don't indent responses, but it would help in the long thread situation mentioned above.

What you almost need is a JS solution.
So that when you put the mouse over a link, something changes next to the parent message. I was thinking changing the LRPD/spacer graphic to something, such as a LBPD or and LGPD.

That helps, but ...
Let's say I've got the following:
1 1.1 2 2.1 2.2 2.3 2.3.1 2.3.2 2.3.3 2.4 2.4.1 2.4.1.1 2.4.1.2 2.4.1.2.1 2.4.2 2.5 2.5.1 2.5.1.1 2.5.1.1.1 2.5.1.1.1.1 2.5.2
If I've clicked on 2.4, I can now see that. But if I want to know what 2.5.2 is a followup to, I still have to set the cursor on it and scroll the page down to see what it lines up with.

Oh, don't worry...
I plan on adding alternate numbering/indentation schemes as well. This works as a stopgap, though, I think.

The problem with this:
We get a lot of threads that would look like this: \r\n \r\n1.\r\n 1.1\r\n 1.1.1\r\n 1.1.1.1\r\n 1.1.1.1.1\r\n 1.1.1.1.1.1\r\n 1.1.1.1.1.1.1\r\n 1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1\r\n 1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1\r\n 1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1\r\n \r\n \r\netc.\r\n \r\n(And yes, I started looking into this one tonight...)\r\n

How about:
A numbering scheme like this?\r\n \r\n1.a\r\n 2.a\r\n 3.a\r\n 4.a\r\n 2.b\r\n 2.c\r\n 3.a\r\n 3.b\r\n 4.a\r\n \r\n Sure, there are 2 3.a's out there. But it is easy to figure out which 2.? a 3.a is actually associated with. \r\n\r\nCheers, \r\nBen
