New new phone
I kept hoping that Apple would cough up a replacement for my iPhone 5S. I loved its slim and compact form factor, but so far, rumors notwithstanding, there has been little evidence that the little thing will be revived. At the local Apple Store this afternoon, as the frau was negotiating repair of her Apple Watch—it fell four feet onto a tile floor the other day, shattering its face—I impulsively replaced it with an iPhone 8, the latest and smallest form factor short of the iPhone XS, for about $400 more. No thank you. I’ll say this: the unit’s camera is incomparably better. The shoddy photo quality was my main issue with the old phone. Farewell, thou good and faithful servant! Enjoy thy afterlife as a dedicated MP3 player!

cordially,
New J has an SE. I've tried to interest her in an 8, but she still likes the small size...
New The form factor is definitely a thing.
My son has a 5SE and much prefers it to the 6S that my wife and I have.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New Re: The form factor is definitely a thing.
Yeah, I greatly preferred the heft of the old phone, but what can you do? I’ll be really torqued if Apple comes out with a refreshed model.

cordlessly,
New Not happening
The XR is the new small iPhone.

Not even full HD on a phone costing the thick end of a grand. That's classic Apple, is that :D

I liked my 6S+ - despite the forehead and chin looking a bit daft in retrospect, it's a form factor that does work, although having seen an Apple LCD side-by-side with a Samsung AMOLED, it's clear that the latter is visibly significantly superior in all aspects. Being able to withdraw the phone from the pocket with my thumb on the touchID sensor, ready for presentation at the Tube gateline, is much more convenient than FaceID. Other retail scenarios are available, but few have the pressing need for speed of the Kings Cross gateline at 9AM on a Monday.

(Also, there's a whole other thread I need to write about facial recognition; long story short, it's dangerous as shit and completely unregulated; I've turned it off on my Note)
New face recognition
I specifically did not want that, which was the other factor, aside from cost, governing my selection of the Model 8.

cordially,
New I wonder if sphincter recongnition would be more secure?
although unlocking your screen while driving might be problematic.

New Oh that hurt
New Sounds like a bum note...
New to my surprise
The old phone, its SIM having been extracted, retains much of its former functionality (it can’t make phone calls, obviously, but was a secondary feature to begin with on the old one.) Gmail and internet both work. The new unit still feels disproportionate, uncomfortable, although I remain highly pleased with the camera, compared to the antique.

cordially,
New It would not have been a surprise to you...
...had you ever owned an iPod Touch*. I did; first generation, back in the day. I left it in a hotel room, whereupon it just vanished, completely mysteriously, as if it were never there.

Anyhoo, it was basically an iPhone without a camera or 3G radio. It was also thinner.

Ah, those were the days; when Apple made shit I wanted.

It replaced my old 20GB disk-based 4th gen (2004-2005) iPod. I sold that for parts when it died - apparently the bumpers that hold the disk itself in place were, at the time, very difficult to obtain, and thus commanded a respectable price on eBay.
New Actually this piqued my interest.
I had a poke around the Apple store (quick lol at the £1500 512GB version of the iPhone XS Max), and I'm mildly amazed that Apple still makes and sells iPods of any stripe. But - there it is: two capacities, and five surprisingly bright colours including pink, blue, and red. Amusingly, the red* version is listed as an "Apple Exclusive colour", presumably to differentiate it from all those coloured iPods from other manufacturers.

But today, £300 for a 128GB music player does seem a bit, well, sporty. And it's abso-fucking-lutely ridiculous that the iPod does not have a headphone jack. But still. An iPod, running the current version of iOS. I absolutely did not expect that to be a thing in 2019.

*It's a Product Red item, and is the one you should buy, because a fraction of your purchase price goes to fighting AIDS. I think we can all agree that this is, without qualification, a good thing.
New They needed the space to make room for all the courage
