Welcome to IWETHEY!

New TWiki
[link|http://www.twiki.org/|This] rox. Doing it at work for internal docs. Thinking it's a useful addition to the IWE 'lectronic menagerie (ILM? Isn't that a special FX?). And there's this annoying Debian shill who agrees with me...

So...question becomes -- can we roll it out on iwethey.org, or should it get its own box (I may be getting reasonable broadband at my pad, though no promises when).

Jason? Others?

Here, there's clearly a call for it in the tech areas. Possibly elsewhere, though I'm not sure I even want to contemplate what a TWiki Politics or Religion web would look like....

It would be good for things like the Penguin Papers that an IWETHEYer used to post.

New Largely, yes
Wiki is good for Collective Intelligence (or Stupidity) type tasks. There actually is a bit of discoursive nature about the whole thing as well.

I'd think that this group might be a good candidate for Wiki development as we're pretty well cohesed (to verb an adjective ;-), and have a fairly strong level of technical expertise. Not to mention we never shut up....

Feedback I'm getting from work is that the searchability of TWiki is something that's readily apparent, as well as the linking (both inentionally, which is pretty damned easy, and incidental, which is pretty damned slick) of content. I like the fact that, from wherever I am in the office, I can grab a browser and jot some quick notes in regard to a conversation, problem, solution, etc. There are also numerous plugins, and Wiki can be extended well beyond the basic "information repository" mode, though I've only just touched on what these opportunities are.

New Hmmm.. sounds like "Info Select"
..the morphing to Windoze of, the utterly-able and simple DOS Tornado Notes. Someone.. maybe even Arkadiy [??] replied eons ago to my comment about IS, that he had worked on (developing) it!

Whatever - your description sounds as if the 'associative' possibilities for ferreting out forgotten lines of thought, has been well implemented. What I miss about Tornado was - the few keystrokes to just.. write a phrase and: how easily it could be retrieved, massaged, incorporated.. later. I never really used the much more complex IS: too much grokking of subtle possibilities, customization yada yada. You can get so Good that, no one will start on the learning curve :(

Wiki sounds even better than IS for maybe [??] having a simplicity like Tornado.. and it need not be running 24/7 on one/several machines.. just: Go there from whichever machine - right? But for me: that would be about a personalized cache, while you are speaking of sharing among the many. Different, however useful. [Unless.. Both ?!]

Just another 'association',

New Mission Statement
Perhaps a quick and dirty wiki page is in order that gives the history of the wandering zIWETHEY tribe. :-)
New Consider it done!
Sounds very cool, and something I want to setup for DarkWind (see ad below :P).

Coming soon: twiki.iwethey.org

I'll post once it's ready to go!

Well, Jason loaded it up, and I'm trying to configure it.

Damn thing is pulling the admin group members from the ether, as far as I can tell.

This is some wacky shit, as Jason put it. :-)

Tell you what, Karsten... how about we get you a login to set it up...? ;-)

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New We're having "issues". :-)
On a few things:

* When I register, I get an error:

Can't call method "mail" on an undefined value at ../lib/TWiki/Net.pm line 187.

* Also, when I try to re-register at that point, it says I'm already registered, yet I don't show up on the users' list. Odd.

* How do I login, or identify myself, if I really do have a login?

I'm so confused! :P

I would really appreciate it, also, if you can take a look at: [link|http://twiki.darkwind.org/twiki/bin/view|http://twiki.darkwi...iki/bin/view] as well and help get the wrinkles out there. It would be muy appreciated. :)

Thanks!

New Not sure why you got that, either.
Because that error went away when I enabled the authorization. However, it did put your name in the .htpasswd file, but not mine. :-)

Like you said, wacky shit, and I just don't have the time to fsck with it right now.

New Mail: SMTPMAILHOST
...IIRC, that's a siteconfig issue, try looking at SMTPMAILHOST in TWikiPreferences, as suggested in $TWIKIROOT/lib/TWiki.cfg. IIRC, that did it for me.

New Re: Mail: SMTPMAILHOST
Cool, well I ended up finding it at:

[link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/twiki/bin/view/TWiki/TWikiPreferences|http://twiki.iwethe...iPreferences]

Just FYI. Updated it, and registration now works.

Only thing not taken care of is edit auth. Right now, it's wide open. I started through the auth steps, but it no worky. I must've missed a step. I setup the .htaccess file, moved the registrationpub page to the registration page. Still no worky.

So, I'm not sure what's up. But, it's functional, at least.

New .htaccess
I took us a while to get things all kopacetic at work, part of the issue being authentication on the TWiki, but part also being closing down external read accesss. My co-admin was beefing over TWiki's realiasing various directories as bletcherous. He finally worked something out but I haven't looked over it enough to know 'zactly what he did.

I'm still getting the installation page and no main twiki when I go to the site. Or are you not set up yet?

Yeah, she's rolling at:

[link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/twiki/bin/view|http://twiki.iwethe...iki/bin/view]

What did you guys do with the main page? Just put a redirect there?

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on with the auth. Like I said, I read through the instructions, followed them to the tee (at least I believe I did), and still no auth. So, I'm at a bit of a loss atm.

New Main page
...er, RTFM, IIRC.

I think it should point to the Web Main Page thingie, though. We created a static HTML file (for a "pretty" entry point) and left it in $TWIKIROOT as index.html, though you might try a symlink or a redirect to the appropriate top level file. Trying to remember if the docs cover this or not.

Read the directions for "Enabling Authentication of Users". Have you added "AllowOverride All" to the appropriate Directory section? I think I had to walk through this a couple of times, but I got it working as expected.

New OK, some config issues
Watch the $TWIKIROOT/lib/TWiki.cfg file, as well as your VirtualHost configuration in httpd.conf. Both are pretty twitchy.

A few things I'm seeing.

The front page, [link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/|[link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/|http://twiki.iwethey.org/]], has a link, "Get started", that points to [link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/bin/view/Main/WebHome|ttp://twiki.iwethey.org/bin/view/Main/WebHome], when it really wants to point to [link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome"|[link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome|http://twiki.iwethe...Main/WebHome]]. Looks to me as if you've got an extra '/twiki' in the actual url, which tells me you've probably misconfigured the VirtualHost in httpd.conf. After setting the value appropriate, restart the webserver ;-)

If not there, then walk through TWiki.cfg and make sure you've got the appropriate values in there. Changes take place immediately, there's no need to restart anything, so playing with values is pretty easy. Some of the paths are filesystem relative, some are server (virtualhost) relative, and the distinction isn't always clear.

If you've enabled authentication (and it appears you have), then take a look at this KB entry at TWiki.org: [link|http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Support/WhereIsTheLoginPage|[link|http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Support/WhereIsTheLoginPage|http://twiki.org/cg...TheLoginPage]]. Note the AllowOverride All directive (httpd.conf) and renaming of "TWikiRegistrationPub" to "TWikiRegistration".

New Now how do you log in?
I registered and was logged in. Closed the browser, came back, can't find a way to log in. I'm in as the WelcomeGuest user, and can't seem to change that.

Also, while in as the WelcomeGuest user, I was able to change the properties of my user account to make it read-only. Odd, but I guess it works out OK considering how everything else works. (Well, it would be OK if I could log in as myself.)

For shits'n'grins, I D/L'd and installed TWiki on my laptop. Got auth up and running properly. So if all y'alls want to chase my dynamic IP around its 56K dialup range....

Barring that, Jason and I could swap configs and take notes.

New Well then, once we get the jelly filling in there ...
This looks one of those things that's just so useful that once I become accustomed to it I'll hate trying to use anything else.[1] I generally don't like systems that try to completely wrap HTML in their own way of doing things, but this is so comprehensive that it seems to be what HTML was originally intended for. Like this is the first good HTML authoring tool.

[1] Like VI. (No VI/Emacs wars, please, I'm comparing it to a typical WYSIWIG editor.) When I switched back to a Windows system, I decided to give it a couple of weeks to re-qccquaint myself with WYSIWIG-style editing. I just can't do it. A couple of months later, I still find myself trying various keyboard shortcuts that don't exist here.

New Yeah, I know, what I meant was ...
They don't exist in the WISIWIG editor I'm using. I actually installed a version of VIM on this box, but I just couldn't get it configured quite the way I liked. And nearly right is worse than completely different IMO. If I don't get that Linux box on my desk soon, I'm going to have to take another crack at it.
