A little note of antiBeastly cheer
It seems that Korea's got a bit more smarts than your average PHB:
[link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/23667.html|As in, Bally: Get Stuffed!]
Seems also that in China - that tiny locale of a few thousand users - in a contract bid by seven purveyors, all 6 locals got a slice but #7 got zippo. (#7 - a criminally shoddy outfit from a NW US state)
Cheers,
A.

Re: Some more on the China angle
Today I bought shares in a Chinese Linux company called X-Team - their shares hit the market 3 weeks ago at 75cents & I bought at 1.08 (HKD 7.8 HKD = 1 us $ - listed on HK Stock Exch under name XTeam).
All my contacts here are saying the Bejing will use this companies Linux and that MS are 'cactus' in China due to fears about their security & licensing - Red Flag Linux is also very well known.
So the China story is smack on as far as my contacts go.
BUT, Today I also saw a copy of Microft CE 2002 for PDAs & was of the opinion it is the best software I have seen for PDA use incl the MSIE it ran - but that PDA was so expensive I won't but one (Casio Cassopia BE-200)
I will probably still buy a Samsung Yopy ($US 399) ( [link|http://www.yopy.com|Yopy] ) as it runs Linux & I am sure it will give WinCE2002 a run for its loot.
Cheers
Doug

Re: Well I bit the bullet & got one (YOPY that is)
Just went to their web site & ordered one (US $399) which is an f-ing site cheaper that the WinCE2002 Cassopia from Casio. And at least the YOPY has Linux on it. (Cassopia is $US 574 here - $US 599 list in US - YOPY has same config, processor RAM, screen dimesions etc:). Cassopia want (7.8 to 1 US) $HK 1,500 for the bluetooth plug-in - add that & the idiot thing is nearly as dear as a palm-top or Notebook.
Hopefully YOPY will prove to be every bit the equal of (& hopefully better) than the Casio Cassopia.
But to be honest - seeing that WinCE2002 complete with MSIE, spreadsheet & word (mini XL & Mini Word) sure made it look a good bundle. To be honest I was tempted to buy & try but as mentioned - price is just over the top.
I'll post a report in Handheld as to what I think of YOPY. Will also be evaluating the Handspring TREO when it arrives in the country.
Cheers

I have one (YOPY that is)
It is pretty good thus far though it lacks any ability to adjust contrast. It also have some software bugs in its control center. Otherwise, not bad for a first release.
Also, got a Sharp Zaurus SL-5000d. It also runs Linux -- pretty decent -- just has some driver install problems, but there is a workaround.

Re: I have one (YOPY that is)
How does YOPY compare size wise to other ?
It looks very high quality (like Sony) whereas the Cassopia looks 'tinny'

size...
The YOPY is a good bit smaller and lighter than the Palm, Pocket PC, and the Sharp. It weighs in at 5 oz. My only complaints are the lack of contrast control and some printing issues with the desktop control center component. YOPY customer service has been great though and they expect to fix the contrast and printing issues shortly. And,yes, the YOPY is very high quality. I'm going to try porting some apps to the YOPY via G.Mate's YDK.
Did you check out their developer site?

Re: GMate dev site
Have been visiting it for past 12 months but not much since the redesigned the YOPY.
I have been following some of the problems reported (USB failing etc:).
Knowing Samsung I anticipated the YOPY would be a very attractive unit. I used to visit Samsung in Korea when doing business with them for IBM (early 1990s).
Very impressive company.
Cheers - Doug
PS I see that the 1GB IBM microdrive works in the YOPY [link|http://www.ibm.com/storage/microdrive/|IBM 1GB Microdrive]
I guess there will be a bluetooth card too soon. That will enable the YOPY to do wireless internet via a mobile phone - I haven't seen any GSM phone modules listed as available, just a couple of modems.

Re: ...Why (& what ?) ... Bluetooth seems to be spreading ?
Just bought an Ericsson T68 with Bluetooth & IRd just to try it out (am in the telecom Internet business).
Seems that YOPY at 5oz & with a bluetooth card, doesn't need a phone or modem as it is abundantly clear to me that if I can have a tiny phone that 'talks' to my PDA when I want to access Internet & that PDA runs Linux & can harness the free software movement (I just started looking at GNUMETRIC etc: for YOPY) - seems that an integrated phone may not be what everone wants - reason I am trying so many of these devices is that I may have to prove my worth to my employer re directions we move in.
YOPY is 2/3 rds the price of Cassopia - looks better, is more elegant & the software 'appears' thus far to match WinCE2002.
Cheers

Re: Well someone seems to love LINUX & XTeam
Their shares (company 8178 on HK Stock Exchange) have gone from 80c HK to $1.4 in 2 days - I am trying to find out more about this company Story I was told is that Chinese Govt is about to mandate Linux across the board & with China predicted to be at least 1/3rd of WW wireless mobile market by 2004, Microsoft have no place in China's future & China has no intention of paying them billions in revenue. It would amuse the hell out of me if it turns out that China is the WW force that finally turns MS into an also ran :-) :-)

On the purely $ side
It appears once again that the Pitiful Giant\ufffd ends up fielding its 'best' to the world - a glass-fragile toy OS built by a criminal organization, suffering also from terminal body odor.
Thus the 'US' loses all the local taxes on that potential (earned) income. Too. Talk about yer balance of trade deficits. If all we have to sell back is intellectual property of This calibre -
How do you say Stuff it! in Mandarin?

Re: Putonghua
These days only the Taiwanese (& Aussies & some others of us) use the term 'Mandarin' - the mainalnd Chinese call it Putonghua
Putong Hua - 'Common language' (Putong = language or speaking , hua = of the people).
Still need time to learn the Putonghua 'get stuffed' stuff (Cantonese is full of how to tell people to get stuffed in a multitude of ways & every thing else).
But Billy 'n Bally are "Fukeee upee'd" as far as China is concerned :-) :-)
Question then becomes 'How relevant is the Chinese OS market' - my response is 'Watch this space' :-) :-)
Cheers
