(Branching this) A start for what?
The replacement is pretty much done; I just have to finish search and WeeCodes. Given that I don't share Todd's intense dislike for Java, I don't see a huge benefit to going with repository-based development on a platform that I don't know and hence don't necessarily trust.
I've got an internationalized, clustered application with unit tests, a full build system, a widely-used framework, well-known and widely-used database drivers, and no performance problems. Where's the benefit? The new application builds full forum displays in 10s of milliseconds; I doubt any other system worth dealing with (ie. not C or ASM) is going to be markedly faster.
If we want to do comparisons, though, the best thing to do is build a WeeCode engine and compare that for speed and maintenance.

Not yet, but...
It doesn't cache everything permanently in a fucking inaccessible object database so you can't do this stuff manually, though.

Good candidate for a port
One of the reasons given for not bothering with ST is that there aren't any apps. If there were a ST implementation of this forum, that would be one more app you can't say that about.
If you've followed best practices building this in Java, it would also serve as a good apples-to-apples demonstration of just what advantages there are (or aren't) to ST.

At one point I was interested in comparisons
cf. the PHP implementation I started.
I'm less interested in comparisons for the sake of comparisons now, and more interested in things that reduce my time in front of a keyboard. :-P
BTW, sorry if this all sounds crotchety, but I'm feeling, well, crotchety lately...

Personal exercise in entertainment
was what I was talking about.
I don't share your attitudes about repositories and Monticello is the best version control system I've ever used.
But I don't really care what you want to use, I wanted to take a shot at doing a clone of some subset of features and comparing code size/difficulty.
Besides, not to bitch about the (begin bow of deference)verifiably correct xhtml(end bow) UI, but this place could use a little prettying up. :-P
Would also be fun for scalability metrics for seaside (we've secretly replace the forum software with Smalltalk for x% of users - lets see if they can tell the difference).]
Incidentally, I saw a demo of a cool seaside app over the weekend. [link|http://www.dabbledb.com|http://www.dabbledb.com] - think web based filemaker-style (simple, no sql) databases.

It's all good.
Like I said, I'm just being crotchety.
About the UI: uh, yes. The new one looks much better IMO. I thought I had posted a screenshot somewhere, but I can't find it now. Keep in mind, though, that this thing has to run on everything from Lynx to OS/2 to GodKnowsWhat.

Then Seaside would be ideal
since Squeak most certainly runs on all of those.
Err - unless you mean specifically the UI only, at which point I say I'm sick of page oriented UI, ajax UI is here, its getting better defined all the time, and if your browser can't cope with the new UI, well, maybe we'll just give you a CLI and some lovely ascii art so as not to frighten you with rapidly changing pixels.

Er, no, that's the UI
And while you may not care about the users' preferences, I do.
That's not to say there won't be an enhanced UI for browsers that are capable of it, just that I'm not going to exclude people who run other stuff.

Porting messages?
Its just a new program on an old database. Right?
If not why not?

Nope.
The old database isn't structured quite the same.
This isn't as big a bang rewrite as I had originally intended wrt. the database, but there are differences.

What were the drivers for this
and was this discussed anywhere?
Feeling a bit more out of the loop now.

I don't recall discussing it.
Mainly I wanted a cleaner design. There are some unnecessary tables. Also there are additional tables for different functionality.
zIWT is a prototype... I wasn't particularly wedded to the design.

It's your baby.
So if you want to re-schema it, go right ahead. Still, it's been performaing marvellously for a prototype.
But I can certainly sympathise with changing a DB's schema. Been trying to do that at work for months. Unfortunately, it's not my design and there are too many places which dance right on the tables. Fortuantely, we're slowly whittling those down.
