Ask a question like my wife...
... and I'll answer you like I answer her.
I answered the first question. Two questions asking the same thing together in opposite ways are a pet peeve of mine. ;-)

Porting messages?
Its just a new program on an old database. Right?
If not why not?

Nope.
The old database isn't structured quite the same.
This isn't as big a bang rewrite as I had originally intended wrt. the database, but there are differences.

What were the drivers for this
and was this discussed anywhere?
Feeling a bit more out of the loop now.

I don't recall discussing it.
Mainly I wanted a cleaner design. There are some unnecessary tables. Also there are additional tables for different functionality.
zIWT is a prototype... I wasn't particularly wedded to the design.

And the whole threading issue
And the ever-expanding object DB.

Those weren't reasons to change the DB schema, though...

It's your baby.
So if you want to re-schema it, go right ahead. Still, it's been performaing marvellously for a prototype.
But I can certainly sympathise with changing a DB's schema. Been trying to do that at work for months. Unfortunately, it's not my design and there are too many places which dance right on the tables. Fortuantely, we're slowly whittling those down.
