Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I say bulldoze it as a prelude to fixing it.
Bulldoze 20+ feet of landfill on top of it, then build a Big Easy theme park on top. Unless you fetishize historical authenticity so much you actually *want* occasional catastrophic floods.

It never should have been built that way in the first place. That is what Mother Nature is trying to tell us.

New That you're an idiot?
The catastrophic failure was because the government financed levees for a Cat-3 storm, not a Cat-5. Adequately funded construction works fine, witness Holland.

New He can't
The possibility that those yer-a-peein' com-yew-nists might be able to teach the US something about civil planning and engineering would simply be rejected input.

New Actually I tend to agree with him....
we have an unusual opportunity to rebuild the city - starting with fill the "bowl" so that the huge levees aren't an absolute necessity.

I don't think it will happen, but I could wrong.
New Yes, parts probably should be filled . .
. . but destroying everything and building a theme park on top of important history is a kinda crude idea.

The cost of that fill would be pretty high and you'd have to get it somewhere. Problem with a delta river is it keeps getting higher and higher above the surrounding land until it overflows and cuts a new course, but here it's restrained so it just keeps getting higher and higher, so the obvious source of fill is to dredge the river.

Of course, given a bit of time, the river will become higher than that fill and you'll be back to containing it.

On the other hand, preserving the historical areas using current methods will probably be cheaper than fill and rebuild.

New Wouldn't work
The land is sinking fairly fast. Fill it now, and in a century or two you'll have the current problem again.

Cheers,
Ben
I have come to believe that idealism without discipline is a quick road to disaster, while discipline without idealism is pointless. -- Aaron Ward (my brother)
New Or sooner, if the global warming stuff continues...
New Yes, it works fine... until it stops working fine.
Actually, those dikes do fail from time to time. What, [link|http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/05/04/issue/feature_gp_netherlands.asp|you didn't know that?]

Excerpts:

The Dutch acquired their hydraulic expertise partly in response to disaster. In 1953, a number of sea dikes in the southwestern part of the country gave way under a tidal surge. The disaster, which killed about 1,800 people, spurred one of the largest hydraulic projects in the country\ufffds history: the Delta Works...

Were Holland\ufffds dikes, dams, and pumping stations ever to fail again as they did in 1953..

I say:

...and they will, sooner or later..

Excerpt:

...a densely populated, 150-by-150-kilometer area would suffer from a catastrophic flood.

I say:

What you are is a [link|http://marlowe-essays.blogspot.com/2005/09/fly-swatting-mentality.html|fly swatter].

You won't catch me investing in Dutch real estate. And I'm staying away from beachfront property until the solar cycle cools down again.

Now be a good little boy and go put your finger in the dike.

New Consistent you are: far from any Real danger. Or imagined.

New Isn't that spelled "dyke" . . .
. . that I'm supposed to put a finger in? :)

Actually the Dutch are planning ahead and thinking of buying out all the farmers in the polders (below sea level areas) because they may not be able to build high enough to counter global warming - Dutch real estate might not be so bad an investment if you expect a buy-out.

So it's not global warming, it's a "solar cycle" - of course it is. Seems like you're a [link|http://marlowe-essays.blogspot.com/2005/09/fly-swatting-mentality.html|denier]. By the way, did you pass that useful phrase on to George?
