Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I'd trade earthquakes for snow/cold any day.
I grew up in California (1962 to 1980), was there for the big one in 71. Earthquakes (at least the variety California often suffers) never scared me and didn't scare most of the people I knew out there. It's funny but I've met a lot more people scared of earthquakes in North Carolina and Indiana that I ever did living in California - where they actually have them.

New Not odd at all
If you're scared of earthquakes, you'd presumably avoid earthquake zones and hence would not be found there.

Cheers,
Ben

New I don't think that's it.
Most of the people here and in NC I met who were afraid of earthquakes held that "California was going to slip off into the ocean after 'The Big One'". IME (admittedly limited) it's ignorance that causes the fear. But, that is the case in most fears.
bcnu,
Mikem

New It already has.
California to the left of the line from the Baja cut to San Francisco Bay is not part of the continent at all. It broke off and it's firmly planted on the Pacific Ocean floor. The only way it's going to slip is north because that's the direction the ocean floor is moving.

So when people say California is "different", that's just natural since we're not even part of the continent. Note that Californians to the right of the falt voted with the Red States (but there aren't a whole lot of them).

New Right. To the north.
Not the west. That's what I was talking about. The pop view that the whole state would be swallowed by the Pacific is what I was referring to.

Mikem

New Re: I don't think that's it.
We had this conversation (earthquakes vs. tornados) a while ago here. Statistically, given the current 30 year forecasts, it can be shown* that you're more likely to die from an earthquake than a tornado.

* Of course, you can show anything statistically.

New Clocks and watches turn the same way everywhere, AFAIK.
(Except for those silly "novelty" clocks and watches... which *also* turn the same way -- anti-clockwise! -- everywhere.)

Would have been another thing if in stead of English, you were talking one of the languages -- I know several -- where the same thing is expressed something like "sunwise",wouldn't it? But... you weren't.
