New Don't buy an all in one.
DVD and VCR both have a much shorter life span. Keep the VCR and DVD sepearte and buy the amp/5.1 speaker set as an all in one.

Sony would get you a pretty decent setup for 500. Same with Kenwood. Check bestbuy for the all in one sony systems.

They even sound good with music playback at resonable to low volumes.

Good advice. I need to start applying my computer hardware tendencies to AV equipment, I suppose.
