New Windows and DOS won't boot. OS/2 & Linux work fine
I installed eCS(OS/2) onto my new Thinkpad T22. To do so, I had to first shrink down the C: partition and then move up the hidden "recovery" partition(no CDs came with system). System worked fine after that, including the recovery partition.

I started the install of eCS. Installed boot manager using LVM and then had some problems creating a bootable partition. So I rebooted into windows(using boot manager) and created a logical partition for eCS. After that, the install of eCS when fine.

I then attempted to boot into Windows to download some OS/2 drivers, and discovered that it wouldn't boot anymore. Neither would the recovery partition. I've tried various DOS and Windows boot disks from work, and none of them will boot either. The diskette will boot up until the hard disk light comes on. Once that happens, the system sits with a blinking cursor in the top left corner.

RH7.1's boot CD came up fine. The install went fine, though I did get a warning at the end about being beyond 1024 and that I should have used lba32. Wish it had told me earlier instead of after doing the entire install.

I suspect there's a conflict with LVM. Any ideas?

New Maybe grab DFSee?
Hi,

I've not used LVM myself.

[link|http://groups.google.com/groups?q=LVM+windows+won%27t+boot&hl=en&rnum=1&selm=SKfw30zmCGmZ-pn2-vd9hbrYlclDw%40x.y.z|This] thread on Google's USENET cache might be appropriate to you. It talks about using LVM with a new install. Doug mentions using DFSee for various tasks.

You can get DFSee [link|http://www.fsys.demon.nl/dfsee.htm|here]. It's shareware with version 4. (I've not used it myself.)

I hope this helps a little. Good luck. I'd like to see you succeed with your travails with the T22 as it seems like a nice machine.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Looks interesting
The google thread didn't help, but the DFSee might. I'll give it a try.

New Didn't have time to try it
had some visitors show up last night. We stayed up late playing Gauntlet: Dark Legacy. For some reason my Alien Wizard turned into a chicken. Character codes can be found [link|http://www.cheatcc.com/psx2/gdl.html|here] - SKY100 = Alien Wizard, NUD069 - S&M Dwarf, AYA555 - Valkrie as Japanese school girl.

I did read up on the instructions and figure if the "recover lost partition" command doesn't work then I'll do this and start over from scratch:

DFS ;Start DFS and scan physical disks
newmbr 1 clean ;Create fresh MBR on disk 1 with
;clean, empty partition table

New Did you move the partition beyond the first 1024 cylinders?

New nope
Original layout was(sizes not exact)
PRIMARY(active)Windows31GB
PRIMARYRecovery1GB

New layout is
PRIMARYWindows2GB
PRIMARYRecovery1GB
PRIMARY(active)Boot Manager7MB
LogicalWinData8GB
LogicalOS/22GB
LogicalOS/2data8GB
LogicalFor Linux10GB

The Boot Manager passes control to whichever partition is selected.

I installed Linux after having the Windows/DOS boot issues. It saw the drive fine and installed everything, but the last thing it said before the reboot was "your system can boot beyond 1024, BUT you need to use LBA32". Not exactly sure where that would go, and I have to wonder why it didn't tell me that where I could have picked LBA32 instead of after it installed everything.

New Is it still a "Primary" partition
or is it an Externded partition? I am not sure if an Extended partition can boot, but I know that a primary one will.

You also may have to update the boot files, just Re-SYS the partition if it is a primary one. See if that helps. I hope you kept your Windows/DOS boot disks.

Picking up the pieces of my broken life.
New Yep
I've even disabled Boot Manager and told the system to only boot Windows. Still no luck.

Extended partitions can boot, OS/2 and Linux do that fine. Only Windows requires itself to be in a Primary Partition.
