I never worried about thermal goo when building my Athon XP1800 box; I just used whatever came on the bottom of the CoolerMaster fan. Still running 18 months later :)

I tend to leave the power plugged in but switched off, and then earth myself by touching a metal part of the case. Never killed a component yet. Well, not by static anyway :)
