It's semi-software - install driver and away you go. Coughing up \ufffd200++ for a 3ware card is something I'll have to consider carefully.

I have recent been introduced to this product...

I have only used it once so far. Works as advertised. Fast. Works. Nice. Works as a single device per channel. You can put 2 on an IDE Bus (master and Slave) to controll 4 disks... They also support Hotswap.
