If 3Ware Escalades are out of your price range, you've just reduced your options to zero, since those are the only ones that (1) do real hardware RAID, and do so (2) without binary-only proprietary drivers (**cough** Promise controllers **cough**).

In your shoes, I'd put the Highpoint into my deepest, darkest closet, and either spring for a 3Ware Escalade or use the kernel's MD (software RAID) driver, which has become battle-tested enough that even I would trust it.

The LSI 22320 with integrated hardware mirroring works flawlessly with Linux and is only about 300 Yankee dollars.

One thing I once saw on VMS - break mirror, back up idle disk, re-establish mirror - that would be cool on Linux.
