Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Time to give Linux another go, but...
I have a dual P3-1000 with 4x 100 GB HDDs sitting doing SFA. I could put W2003 Server on it, but I want to broaden my skillset. However, Linux does not natively support the onboard RAID controller (Highpoint 37x) as a RAID controller, and I don't like to trust my data to a non-mirrorred drive.

So, I need a cheap RAID controller that supports RAID 0+1 or RAID 5.

Yes, I know about software RAID and I'm not interested.

New Which Highpoint 37x card is it?
Because... there seems to be support for it.

RAIDing your worst nightmare...
New Re: Which Highpoint 37x card is it?
It's an Abit VP6 with a HPT 370 RAID controller. The chipset is supported, but not as RAID.

New HPT37x is software raid
Yes, I know about software RAID and I'm not interested.

You do realize the the highpoint stuff is software raid? It just has a semi-intelligent raid capable bios. Under the OS, it's all software raid with their own "special" software raid driver.

It's semi-software - install driver and away you go. Coughing up \ufffd200++ for a 3ware card is something I'll have to consider carefully.

New Ok... you could try

I have recent been introduced to this product...

I have only used it once so far. Works as advertised. Fast. Works. Nice. Works as a single device per channel. You can put 2 on an IDE Bus (master and Slave) to controll 4 disks... They also support Hotswap.

Hotswapping with the worst of them...
New Accept no imitations

Then, you'll hate Highpoint cards.

If 3Ware Escalades are out of your price range, you've just reduced your options to zero, since those are the only ones that (1) do real hardware RAID, and do so (2) without binary-only proprietary drivers (**cough** Promise controllers **cough**).

In your shoes, I'd put the Highpoint into my deepest, darkest closet, and either spring for a 3Ware Escalade or use the kernel's MD (software RAID) driver, which has become battle-tested enough that even I would trust it.

If you lived here, you'd be $HOME already.
New :) yep
The LSI 22320 with integrated hardware mirroring works flawlessly with Linux and is only about 300 Yankee dollars.

One thing I once saw on VMS - break mirror, back up idle disk, re-establish mirror - that would be cool on Linux.
