Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I want my own server machine on the internet
I'm too transient to think about having a box at home (considering that I'm presently homeless).

What I want is my own unix box (all mine - don't want to share it) on some static IP address somewhere. I could own the box or the host could - I don't care - but I don't want to share or be restricted in what software I put on it.

Who offers such a thing and what would I expect to pay for it? Most hosting deals I see are just for static content.

Thanks for any info.

New Talk to Greg maybe.

New Some ISPs will allow you to put one of your boxes
on their internal network for a fee. You buy the box, install the software, and then pay them a fee to put the box on their internal network and assign an IP address to it. I think it is costly, but it can be done.

The fee would also be for monitoring the uptime of the box and having an administrative account on it to fix things for you.

New You don't want to be restricted.
But you haven't even described what you want? What are you wanting in the way of "stuff".

Iffn, you do that... Maybe *I* already have what you are looking for.

Maybe, sharing WOULD be okay... The only thing you gotta do is be careful.

New Usually the restricted stuff is
things an ISP doesn't want to support..

But what he wants, and I am guessing here, is to install software that the ISP normally won't install like a Jabber Server, JSP, Postgres or some other database, etc. Usually an ISP limits what you can install on a server for security reasons, or they don't want to support too many things.

New Answering...
Norman, you know *I* am running a HOSTING service aimed at people with high expertise. Therefore I am very flexible.

There are very few (if any that would apply to Todd) restrictions.

And let the person answer for themselves.

New Restrictions
of course I was only guessing what restrictions may be. I understand that you do offer extensive hosting services, more things than other hosting companies. If I had the money, I'd be tempted to buy your hosting services. I have a domain name, etc.

But yes, let Todd answer what he wants to run. Only he can answer what kind of things he doesn't want restricted. Again I am only guessing here.

New I sent you email
but basically I want to have anonymous ftp, apache with ssl available, put up some little app servers on various ports, and run postgres.

Probably do some virtual hosting of a few different domain names. Run an IMAP server and maybe mail list software...

Pretty basic. Things will come to me as I get things organized.

All I want from the hosting service is DNS for my domain names and the operator to do backups (and possibly a restore/reinstall if I screw up). Otherwise, hands off.
