New Brief, suitably nasty message sent.
Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of clueless Suits.
New Woo hoo!
I have recently heard about Office Depot's plan to require all hardware and software sold through your chain to be Microsoft Windows XP certified. This news comes as a great relief to me, as well as the employees of my company. You have just made all of our lives a little bit easier.

You see, as a company that focuses on Linux and Linux-based solutions, we no longer will have to get quotes from Office Depot for hardware and software that we might want to purchase in the future.

Once again, thanks!

New Sent an email - will be making the phone call, and . .
. . am preparing an article for my Web site.

Ladies / Gentlemen:

As a business technology influencer, directly to nearly 200 companies, and indirctly to thousands of businesses through my popular business technology Web site, I will be recommending that all businesses avoid purchasing from Office Depot.

The reason for this is simple: your enforcement of the "Designed for Windows XP" logo program hands Microsoft, already convicted on 8 counts of abusing a monopoly, additional monopoly leverage to drive competing products from the market. This is simply bad for purchasers of business technology, encouraging yet higher prices for Microsoft products and yet lower margins for those who sell them.

Unable to sell in volume without the Logo, hardware manufacturers and software publishers will be at Microsoft's mercy. Microsoft is the only issuer of the logo and can thus eliminate any product they don't like for competitive reasons. Also, as they have in the past (see both federal and Caldera antitrust suits), Microsoft will suggest, off the record or under nondisclosure agreement, that Logo approval might be a lot quicker and easier if support for Apple and/or Linux is discontinued.

I realize you have probably moved to make the XP Logo mandatory under pressure from Microsoft, and that your nondisclosure agreement forbids you to admit to that pressure, but sometimes it pays to grow a spine.

I look forward to hearing that you have withdrawn the program. Meanwhile, I'm preparing an article for my Web site.

Thank you for your attention.

Osama bin Laden's brother could fly in US airspace 9/15/01, but I had to wait for FBI and CIA background checks, 'nuff said?
New I did too...
Talked to Linda Johnson... his personal assistant/secretary...

Also sent an e-mail with reciept numbers and stores of purchase to her.

Totaled a bit more than $255K.

I replaced 68 machines in a weekend after developing the image for the machines... ~$3k for each machine totally licensed software and all. P-III 1.2GHz, 512MiB Memory, 40GiB HD, mostly 19" monitors (21" for the CAD stations), W2K, MSO-XP Pro, Norton System Works, a myriad of other software... and PuTTY plus a few other OSS apps... This company wanted "Name Brand" equipment... so I looked and compared... overall Office Depot was the best bang for the buck.

These replaced 486-DX2-66 machine basically running Q-Modem Pro through a serial connection to the HP9000.

They spent just under $210K at Office Depot in a short period of 1 month.

Oh well if that doesn't help them understand the position they have put themselves in... not much will.
