New Re: Respectfully disagree.
It's tempting to say "a pox on both your houses," but I learned long ago (when I was half Nader's present age) that to spurn the lesser of two evils is to engorge the greater, and this is, disastrously, what his lunatic and self-indulgent 2000 campaign served to do. And if our Ralph, serene in his deluded messianic purpose, runs again next year your take will be...?

cordially,
"Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist."
New Reminds me of the Duma.
Can the current system be reformed from within? I think that's the base question. Answer "No" and one might/must support another Nader run. Answer "Yes" and Nader is to be condemned.

It is an important question and one I have not given enough thought to. However, recent events (USSC appointment, Gestapo OHS implementation, suspension of the Bill of Rigths, etc.) are pushing me ever closer to answer the above question "No". That said, I have no illusions about Nader's delusions of grandeur. My point is simply that through his actions he may be underscoring an argument he, himself, hasn't even thought about.

As to reform.. during and since Vietnam, it has been repeatedly demonstrated (often by 'decoy' sign-up tables at malls, and the like) that many.. most? Muricans are ignorant of even the Bill of Rights (or where that might be found), let alone the rest of the basic Documents.

Further, when faced with verbatim excerpts - no recognition is kindled and often the same old cant from my Gramma's mindset manifests - sounds Commie to me..

To whatever extent the above would fare in a genuine plebiscite: Muricans cannot be troubled to govern themselves -- though the same offending group of ignoramuses will Rush to support our imposing some cockamamie idea of Muricanism -- on anyone else out there, weak enough to be prey to Corp aims. All it needs is juvenile spin. We are a nation of Babbitts, apparently - uqick to anger / misunderstand; even quicker to close (rather infrequently-used) minds. And sanctimony is our largest attitudinal export.

Reform? *THAT* requires interest, basic knowledge, tenacity and Purpose, not to mention eptness about human foibles.. enroute. (And a facility for puncturing Red Herrings sure to be floated in opposition) - In a word or two, it demands basic competence in ethics and civics.

See where I'm going re the chances ?

New Correct
I hate agreeing with a real liberal but it can't be avoided here.

If you actually have some sense of what is good for the people you will fall on your sword. Nader's only defense would be that he didn't think a Bush admin would be significantly worse than a Gore one.

New I don't think so.
I think Nader goofed. I think he thought he could get some concessions out of the Democrats (who were more likely to listen to him) by running - like maybe get to be the new Secretary of Labor or something. I really don't think he thought he could tip the scales of the election. If he did, I don't think he would have run because I think he knew what this would be like - as many of us did.

New Hard to claim Nader responsible, imo.
