New WPS/PM doesn't initialize
Another odd problem I'm getting is the GUI doesn't initialize. I get the blue background and mouse pointer. The system startup sound doesn't happen and none of the icons or WarpCenter show up.

I've read in the past that sometimes the WarpCenter causes problems and to take it out of the AUTOSTART line in config.sys and put a shadow into the STARTUP folder. That did not solve the problem either.

I've found a work-around for now. While booted up to the command line, I accidently typed E CONFIG.SYS instead of TEDIT CONFIG.SYS and the GUI came up. On a hunch, I added START E into STARTUP.CMD and during a normal boot the E window comes up, then the system startup sound happens and all the icons and WarpCenter come up like normal. Of course I have to close the editor window, but I can deal with it for now.

New Re: WPS/PM doesn't initialize
That's really weird. What video drivers are you using?

That's the WPS that's stopping; the blue background means that PM came up, but that it stops before the WPS comes up.

Try just having startup.cmd with an "exit" in it, and see if that kicks it off for you.

New SDD
I reinstalled Friday when I went into "hardware safe mode". I thought with all the hard drive messages it was possible that data written to the drive might have been corrupted. What's really weird about it is I did multiple reboots Friday night to see if the "unable to work hard drive" message would come up. No changes at all, just multiple reboots and everything worked fine. I booted Saturday morning to a hung WPS.

I'm currently using the version of SDD that came with ECS. I'm doing the updates on an extended schedule(one every few days) to see if problems show up after I install something. I ran a fresh install Friday and Saturday. Today I used the ECS Maint Tool to install device driver pack 3(and whatever else EMT auto-installed after it).

I haven't been able to get joysticks working so this afternoon I tried the "enhanced joystick driver" that Vesa wrote. I had problems right away and removed them. I suspect IBM's joystick driver might have been causing problems too - they never recognized the joysticks. The motherboard has a built in joystick port, but I suspect the i/o is being mapped somewhere other than the traditional location.

Before I changed it, startup.cmd had only EXIT in it. I also tried renaming startup.cmd to prevent it from running, that didn't help either. If I can't figure it out, I'll try having startup.cmd run the eCS Clock(and remove the clock from the startup folder). At least then I won't have to close E everytime I boot.

On a side note - I just tried changing the bus speeds back and got an unable to work hard drive message right away. So I suspect the SCSI card is being overclocked(or affected by something else timing related) when the CPU bus is set to 133 instead of 100.

New Hardware
Hmmm... it's been said before that OS/2 is the best way to detect flaky hardware.

Try taking everything out of startup, and cleaning the autostart line to read only FOLDERS, TASKLIST. See if you can get it to reliably boot after that.

New should have mentioned - Matrox G400
bought that back when SciTech said they'd support the G400 for Dual Head output. While they've finally added Dual Head, they only go back to the G450 :(

I may replace it with a G550, but when I do that I want to go dual flat panel, so it'll be a while.

New Have you gone to the eCS website and
downloaded the latest available version of SDDse? It's been updated since 1.0 was released.

As for waiting a while... gee, I wonder why:) ka-CHING! $$$

New no change
installed SDD dated Oct 28, 2002. Also changed the autostart line and removed everything from the startup folder.

For now I've changed startup.cmd to start the clock instead of E.

New New eCS site looks nice - but
and it's a big but - it appears to be hard-coded to a 640 wide display. Makes it look bad on a 1600x1200 screen.

checking source...

Actually it's hard coded to a width of 700:

New FWIW, Warp 4 & G400 with SNAP for OS/2 2.0 works fine here.
Of course, this system is about 4 years old now, so I'm not sure how things would behave if I threw new HW at it.

I should be finding out soon, however. I'm in the process of gathering some new pieces and will most likely do a complete re-install of every OS on here.

Should prove to be interesting....
New found something about AGP aperture & WPS hanging
In Julian's [link|http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0302H/vnewsf2.htm|review] of some SMP motherboards, he mentions this:
I had to change a few BIOS settings like the AGP aperture to allow the OS/2 GUI to come up, otherwise it would hang when starting the WPS.
not very explicit, but interesting info non-the-less.

I'm taking back the hardware today - even though fiddling with the AGP aperture might fix the WPS hangs, I still get "unable to operate your disk drive" messages during some boots. And those messages come well before any WPS hang.
