New US battles calls for emergency UN session on Iraq
[link|http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A5408-2003Mar21.html|Here]

The United States has launched a worldwide diplomatic drive to head off the calling of an emergency session of the U.N. General Assembly to condemn the U.S.-led war on Iraq, diplomats said on Friday.
Why?

Don't we have a "Coalition of the Willing"?

It will be VERY interesting to see what happens if such a resolution is voted upon.

It's kind of hard to claim "support" for your cause when you have to VETO a UN resolution condemning it.
New Re: US battles calls for emergency UN session on Iraq
The US should tell the UN to F*** OFF. The UN has shown its utter lack of teeth; unless it pulls a rabbit out of its hat, it'll become irrelevant.
qts
New Then why is the US afraid of it?
Why did the US refuse to put its resolution up for a vote?

Why is the US fighting the meeting?

:)

Ah, the old, "if it ain't military force, it ain't important".

Well, the world is a little bit more complicated than that.

The UN cannot stop the US from invading a defeated country.

But that war will not last forever.

Eventually, the US will have to trade with the rest of the world.
New Trade?
Well those "unwilling" countries were perfectly willing to violate their own embargo with Iraq...so bring on the sanctions baby...might lower our balance of trade payments.

Ahem.

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New I'll explain this VERY slowly for you.
#1. Iraq was NOT talking about INVADING any other country.

#2. Turkey IS talking about INVADING another country.

#3. You (Scott) do NOT understand the difference between not invading and invading.

#4. An INVASION needs to be met with MILITARY force.

#5. You (Scott) are still operating under the false impression that Iraq was attacking another country.
New Sorry, you have me confused with someone else.
And I tire of pointing out your inconsistencies to you. TTFN.

New Awwww, is that the best you can do?
Afraid I'll lay another smackdown on you?

You should be.

Well, maybe NOW you can tell the difference between an INVASION and the absence of an invasion.

Or, maybe you can't.
New Still trying to save the UN from itself.
Time to move on, I say. Let the UN be Chirac's sex toy. We have better things to do.

Can we reclassify protesters in America as "enemy combatants"?

New The Fascist Faction has spoken.
New Nixon already tried that
..and the Chicago police, 1968. Didn't work.

They shot them at Kent State, and that didn't work either.

Eventually of course, Nixon resigned. But those kids were still dead.

New Spoken like a true UnAmerican; where's HUAC? SISS?
Flunked civics too, did we? (Like the members of HUAC and SISS -- Oh, *thats* where both committees went: shamed into extinction! ..until we got the brand new Home Security SS, of recent creation, that is.)

So then - you go along with the trashing of any remnants of the Constitution, not already abrogated by the renegade Cabal currently usurping the power of this Republic.. Just declare any opposition to your fantasy - an ex-citizen!

If'n I ain't for Your Warfare State - you gets to declare *ME* an ex-citizen? Betcha couldn't list the contents of half the Bill of Rights (and don't 'believe' in most of them) -

I'd say that *YOU* should be the one declared an ex-citizen.

What would Jesus bomb?

(PS - My father didn't get himself blown up in the Pacific in '45 - for an Empire. Either. We patriots understand and fight *for* the Constitution, not for jingoist toadies.)
New War?
This is no more a war than Mike Tyson pulverizing a belligerent 2 year old is a boxing match.

New We can if they go far enough....
And if their frustration level mounts, they're gonna try to invade some base in SoCal. Oh, and does anyone know who lost those Molotov cocktails in SF?

Very unhealthy. Running out of control and heading for self destruction. That's what happens when you run open loop. You get out of touch with reality, and there's no corrective feedback.

politics as usual. There is also a resolution to kick the US out of the UN and take away the veto.

New Let them have the UN
I could care less about the UN. The UN is an attempt to create a world government, and make all countries subject to it.

Sorry, there are lots of countries in the world, and all have different agendas and the UN simply doesn't work like the League of Nations didn't work in the early 20th century.

We were fools for joining after WWII.

I'm sorry, but we live in a dark world ruled by evil, greedy people who lead nations with lots of guns, and bombs, and tanks, and ships, and planes. Each country has it's own agenda determined by the preferences of it's leadership.

The UN attempts to get nations to all agree to similar rules and protocols, but it only works about 10-20 years, then the agendas of the nations diverge and the UN breaks up.

Sorry, but the UN works only as long as everyone wants to play along.
New I thought so at first in anger but

Indeed - perish the thought that you have perfectly described the USA-2002, that you don't even *see* the irony of your description of.. *US* and of any lingering chances for homo-sap ever to grow up, via self-discipline.

Yours is the pure strain of Xenophobic Disease, unencumbered by the thought process. (And, I'll bet: 'pious' as Hell. Every Sunday.. for about an hour.)
