New Alternative careers
Hi, all,

Have you ever considered an alternative career, however briefly, however outlandish?

Thanx,

- pdmoderator
New OTR Owner Operator

New There are easier ways to get away from that 18 yr old. :-)
New I like long drives, have driven tractors before.
Actually discussed with wife for when the youngest one moves out. Other retiree's buy a Motor Home, I would make some side money by doing the same thing.
thanx,

Kinda like Star Trek in the Big Rig Enterprise.

New Yep
Current plan is to save cash from doing this road warrior gig I'm currently on, and then use the money saved to open up a SCUBA shop.

New Why not?
There are divers wot live here. Lotsa great wrecks in Michigan. Ice diving is a specialty, as is dry suit diving. Besides...vacations that I can write off when I go to the Caribbean can't be all bad!
-YendorMike

[link|http://www.hope-ride.org/|http://www.hope-ride.org/]
New True enough, like the dive shop in Anchorage
had to keep the shop open by inspecting commercial boats. That would be way more interesting than IT. Good luck to ya.

New Wet suits...
Lots of people from Chicago-way come up to Michigan in the summer.

Lake Michigan is rather cold until about August or so... I myself have a wetsuit that I used for water skiing.
Regards,

-scott anderson

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New you gonna spend anytime under the water a dry suit would be
better. It gets cold in the GLakes

New Note: wa-ter ski-ing
Implies not much time spent in the water, let alone under it. ;-)

New Not for me
I pissed off my instructer by refusing to be whipped.

He make a fist indicating he was about to whip and I'd shake my head. He'd insist, and I'd drop the line.

So he didn't warn me, took it REALLY tight and fast. As I was skipping over the water like a stone, I lost it. Did a couple of cartwheels, and then landed sideways. Continued to roll over the water. Ripped my shorts right off my body and I lost them.

I got a little wet after that.
New Instructor? do you get an instructor for lap dances too?
latest fun thing in Alaska according to one of my buds. Get a Heavy equipment innertube, strap some canvas to it. Load it with drunks, attach a jetboat with a chevvy 455 motor and a long rope to the front. Go like hell and see how fast you can ditch the drunks.

New Pulling wings off flies needs less equipment.
New Re: Instructor? do you get an instructor for lap dances too?
I dunno.
Was I getting lap dances at camp at age 10?
That was when I was water skiing.
New my apologies, at 10yo I was instructed by pop's friend
put the rope between the ski's and hang on tight. What seemed like 2 minutes at 50 mph being drug under the water they stopped the boat and said "oh yeah, when the boat start forward pull yerself up then hang on tight." worked fine then.

New Sounds like my experience.
But I never was given the instruction about pulling up. :-/

Cheers,
Scott.
New Does Berry Scuba still exist?
They used to have a couple of stores in the south suburbs and in Lombard near Yorktown mall. If they do, then it might be tough to compete against them. There was a place on 59 one half mile north of I-88 that went out of business several years ago. I took lessons from a guy that had a shop behind the Glen theater in Glen Ellyn back when I was young.

Never saw a scuba shop in Naperville, but with Naperville and Aurora combining for over 1/4 million people, that's a lot of potential customers.

New Yep
They used to have a couple of stores in the south suburbs and in Lombard near Yorktown mall.
Yep, they're still around.
If they do, then it might be tough to compete against them.
I dunno. I've been to two of their stores and I was thoroughly not impressed. Most of the stores I've been to in Austin and NJ seemed much better in terms of selection and service...
There was a place on 59 one half mile north of I-88 that went out of business several years ago.
Nope. That one is still there. I was in that shop in October looking for a work-for-free job. Offered my services completely free. Got turned down. He said he didn't need any help. Whatever...

That's rather my exact point. Lots and lots and lots of people here. There's gotta be a market somewhere!

Game theory specialist.
Police officer.

New Oh... here it comes...
Philosopher.

Professional Model Builder.

Auto Restifier (Restorer/Modifier), I like my cars better than they were back then... but still look the part. (i.e.: Wilwood 4 piston Disc brakes vs. OEM Drum, Stainless Exhaust vs Coldrolled pipe, etc...)

Professional High School 1on1 Tutor.

Quantum Physics Systems Engineer... (the person that develops the plans for the PAs and some such things)

Last but not least, Underwater Welder... best left unsaid.

New I do that one...
...in my "spare-time" and "spare-money". As of late I haven't been into alot of spare money.

That actually was my first career choice... but when I had to choose, there wasn't a single one around here in GR.

New Underwater welder
I went to some state sponsered job training when I was about 18. Fresh out of rehab. Things like how to behave in a interview.

When they asked what type of job training you wanted to get, I told them underwater welder. They were not amused.
New Re: Underwater Welder

New my choices
Secret agent (like James Bond) - why not? He's got it all: guns, gadgets, and girls.

Official Taster at a German brewery - to get the best stuff.

Hit man for the Chicago mob - they've always set the standard.

Airline pilot - love their paychecks and hours worked per month ratio.

Oh - you meant ones we actually had a shot at achieving? Then I'll go for Database Administrator, since I've bought a test prep book to start on my MCDBA.

New Manufacturing
In a past life, I was a Quality Manager. Worked my up from a mechanical inspector in a machine shop, to a quality engineer, and then on to Quality Systems Manager.

Been thinking about going back to that. In fact, I got a call back on a resume I sent out a few weeks ago, ned to return the call monday.

New Nearly took up IT Education, once.
I gave a few small courses (of approx 90 minutes, about SAS) to groups of people at work - and it was fun. Figured that ultimately the money wouldn't be as good as sticking with programming. Also realised later what it's like being a student in a course where the instructor is just teaching from the book and has no idea what he's teaching - I figured I'd not be able to know every subject I'd probably end up teaching, and wasn't at all keen on that.

Apart from that, international pop stardom still awaits :)
John. Busy lad.
New downsides
The problem with IT teaching is that most of your "customers" are going to live in India over time. The same forces that are drying up IT jobs will also dry up the local demand for IT education, leaving a glut of IT teachers.

New Well, I'm working in a costume shop at the moment
And I was an Owner/Operator for a courier company for a while.

Both involve negative pay.

But the costume shop may go positive soon.

Seasonal theatre, public participation. I won't say there are *no* IT aspects, but it's not IT-specific.

New Hey, I'd love to be here more
But Self Employed doesn't mean a long break so much as working my ass off 20 hours a day.

Things are getting saner, though, and I'm getting more organized, so I might be able to spend a bit more time here. Maybe I'll post the saga of the Morasco's Building soon. Right now, though, I'm preparing to move the store out of its current location by May 31. We don't know where we will be moving into, though.

One thing I have been doing lately is participating on the advisory board for Carving Magazine. And the editor says she's interested in my writing an article on how to write instructions. Could be fun. I seem to be well on the way to becomming a famous carver without actually damaging a lot of wood.
