..it's because a lot of WPS is written in assembler.

SOM and DSOM were better then OLE and NetOLE, and that was the motivation for COM and DCOM, and finally COM+. But, the underpinning should be sufficient. In any case, a boatload of OS/2 coders would happily deal with whatever problems were at hand.
