Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Someone tried to break into my car last night.
Somebody might have interrupted them - they didn't get in, and they only banged up one handle. Still, with my POS auto insurance company it will cost me $$$$$ to get fixed - they raised the deductible to $1000 after I fixed TWO winshield cracks through them.

Arrrgh!

The handle still works fine, but this car is starting to accumulate enough problems that I can't afford to get all the bodywork done to sell it off. Rust spot on rear bumper, scratch on hood (somebody keyed it), leaky roof, and now this. The car itself runs fine, except for not being able to start in one case - when the weather is VERY hot, and the hood is in direct sunlight. If I roll it into shade, it starts just fine. Other than that, no problems at all.

New note on car insurance claims
my rule if it is less than $500.00 to fix I dont tell them about it because it will cost you 2k over three years in increased rates.

New something else
I had a friend who had two tires stolen off of his car.

He filed a claim with his insurance company.

The next night, they came back and took the other two tires.

He filed another claim.

The insurance company cancelled his policy. Too many claims in too short of a time period.

Insurance companies exist only to take money from you. It is not in their best interest to pay claims.

I go for the minimum necessary and pay for any other repairs myself. Too costly to go through an insurance company.
New The repeated theft thing
I had a similar thing happen with my car battery a few years ago. Didn't bother my insurance company about it, though.

Anyway, the cops said the theives probably threw the first battery away. The idea is that then there is a brand new one to steal.

We took the car battery out every time we parked until we moved.

New Addendum
Someone's car got stolen, right next to mine. Looks like they started on mine and then for some reason switched to a different car.

New Someone tried to steal mine some months back.
Mostly my fault for forgetting to alarm it...

They got in with minimal damage, but couldn't get the steering-wheel lock off. Really! It's got a dent where they obviously tried a technique that may have worked on a different brand, but it didn't open it or alter its security. Mind you, I bought it some years ago when it was the only brand [link|http://www.choice.com.au/|Choice magazine] couldn't defeat.

New makita and screwdriver fixes all steering wheel locks
unless ytou have the vaunted club then simple bolt cutters on either side of where the club resides gives you 9/10ths of the sterring wheel to drive with. It all depends on how badly they want it. I suspect with my vehicles I could leave it with the keys in it and not have them nicked.

New You might be surprised....
My mom's beater '86 Olds 98 with 300,000 miles on it was stolen. From her church parking lot. By a 16 year old kid.

He apparently used a "slide hammer" to yank the lock cylinder. In the process the headlight switch was damaged so the high-beams headlights were always on. To "fix it" he bashed out the high-beams.

Oh, and he smashed up the rear end by backing into something.

Of couse, as "luck" would have it, he was caught a day or so later, so "luckily" she got it back. A few hundred to fix the damage (except for the bodywork which it still suffers with).

Being a minor, nothing of consequence was done to him. She's talked of suing his parents in small claims court, but it's been just talk so far.

Don't underestimate the stupidity of people who steal cars...

Cheers,
Scott.
New Re: Someone tried to break into my car last night.
Why did you claim for such minor items? The thing to do is th contact the insurer and state that the accident has happened and that you do not expect to be making a claim, but reserve the right to do so after you've had it inspected.

That way they're happy because you've informed them as your contract specifies and you're not going to cause them to pay out.

I turned to him, I said, "A-balone. You're just being shellfish." Well, I knew it was going to be trouble and so did Gill, who was already on the phone to the cods.
