Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Some are better, especially the more technical ones
although overall trade mags are in big, big trouble -- with a internet being a major cause. I use the internet as a major source of information when looking for products (e.g. omni barcode readers). I might also use trade mags, but often they fall short.

I think the few ones with good editorial will do OK. Some examples are:
Photonics Spectra
A2C2 (Advanced Applications for Critical Cleaning)
Cadalyst

I can name quite a few others where the reviews are never critical, the articles are always puff pieces, etc.

I'd like to see more critical thinking and analysis -- that's why The Reg is my favorite for IT news.

New ComputerWorld is still worthwhile, I think
New shark tank anyway rest is mooing platitudes

New You demonstrate my point -- we want good EDITORIAL content,
not more press releases and regurgitations from the vendors (especially MS).

The Shark Tank is always worth reading.

Tony
New Preach it, brother.
The Register's fearless, no-bullshit reportage is a vital part of my IT newsfeed.

I'm particularly thinking of their response to the NewsBytes article about CardCops.

Everyone in the profession should read The Register, because contrary to what some people would have you believe, they don't make it up.

They just tell it how it is.

New Amen -

ROFL! Are you kidding? They COULDN'T make that stuff up!

New I think they are sometimes off base
in their analysis, BUT:
3. Generally they are right on
2. Even if I don't agree with them, their opinion are still worth reading and thinking about.
1. (By far the most important reason I wish more journalists were like the Reg's) They actually do analyze and think intelligently about what's going on in the PC biz, instead of just regurgitating press releases and the latest line from MS.

Tony
New Reg reminiscent {sniff} of what IW was... *long* ago
Only vastly better than IW achieved (but - that also was 'then').

I hope they / their staff are er eating well.. no one is not-a prostitute when the kids are screamin for more gruel and, BillyBally come visiting with Monopoly Money not from the game board.

(I'd doubt UK immune; just likely more resistant to the Obvious ploys which work so *well* with vast majority of Murican PHBs. In fact I have little idea about the UK-PHBs' TLAs and differing-styles of mental masturbation ??)

Peter? an overview.. for anthropological research?

Cheers,

A.
New Re: I think they are sometimes off base
4. If they are wrong, they admit it
French Zombies are zapping me with lasers!
New Peter, you live near London?
The reg has an article up looking for a new writer. You meet one important qualification. Legally able to work in G.B.
"When it crosses my mind to do something, I don't ask why, I ask why not. And usually there's no reason not to, so I just go ahead. It's given me the strangest collection of hats"
New Naw, I live in the Northeast.
Also, their salary is shite. \ufffd18-24K doesn't go very far in London, at all.
