It's XML-based IM, both server and client available on multiple platforms, plus it can SSL encryption. A company that I deal with a lot runs their own server for corporate communications, and it works great! You could run your own Jabber server at the school for student and faculty use only :) This might be something that zIWT could use too... However, just about all of my students run Windows and if they have to download and install a new IM client, chances are they're not going to. I agree, though, Jabber is great for intranet messaging since you can control your own server and not have the messages going out over the Internet.
