I've played with Jabber, mainly as something to add to my UNIX sysadmin class project. It's pretty neat and not that hard to set up. However, just about all of my students run Windows and if they have to download and install a new IM client, chances are they're not going to.
I agree, though, Jabber is great for intranet messaging since you can control your own server and not have the messages going out over the Internet.
