My latest addiction
While the server was down my nephew came visiting. He asked for access to aim, so I installed gaim. And then at Peter's urging I got an account.
So now I have a bunch of names from Peter and have wasted too much time chatting. If any of you want to add yourselves to that list, my login is benjtilly.
Not as good as iwetheyinteractive was, but it will do. :-)
Cheers, Ben

Re: My latest addiction
Unfortunately, through the years I've had to use each one, now I'm stuck using them all, as I just can't get my friends to standardize, dammit! :)

So...
You use Trillian or EveryChat???
At work I am stuck with only AIM...and that was a struggle now that we're in our newfangled, hyperrestricted Win2k mode. (It pays to know the students hired to do the work)
AIM is ...of course... bepatient

Trillian...
...all the way!
I had tried to use it a few years ago and it was really rough. Then, one day, I just got fed up with having every-freaking-IM-program installed on my machine. I broke down and tried it again to find that the interface was greatly improved, and much more usable.
So, I've been a big fan ever since. :)

Well I would like to standardize as well...
And besides which I am wasting enough time with just AIM.
Your name has been added, and you ICQ folks are going to be out of luck at the moment. :-)

Jabber
I'm experimenting with IM as an additional communication channel for my students
Hey Tom,
Something you might want to check into is [link|http://www.jabber.org|Jabber]. It's XML-based IM, both server and client available on multiple platforms, plus it can SSL encryption. A company that I deal with a lot runs their own server for corporate communications, and it works great! You could run your own Jabber server at the school for student and faculty use only :)
This might be something that zIWT could use too...
Forgot to add, I'm on AIM as ToniasHub, and ICQ aa 2569633.

Re: Jabber
I've played with Jabber, mainly as something to add to my UNIX sysadmin class project. It's pretty neat and not that hard to set up. However, just about all of my students run Windows and if they have to download and install a new IM client, chances are they're not going to.
I agree, though, Jabber is great for intranet messaging since you can control your own server and not have the messages going out over the Internet.

Wow! That's a seriously impressive example of presenting info over the web ... even if it is Flash. Many thanks for posting that link - eek, I've been educated! :-)
