New The formula shortage drives me crazy
What percentage of these people can breastfeed? What bullshit has the formula industry foisted upon these people to tell them that they shouldn't breastfeed?

How have we sexualized boobs in such a manner that women consider it is sexual experience and cannot breastfeed? I've heard too many stories that align with that one. It's all such bullshit.

Sure, there is the occasional baby that will puke out and die without a specialized formula. But what percentage is it? I used to sell this stuff. We were evil bastards. This is totally unnecessary.
New Yes, but also ...
Breastfeeding takes a lot of time, making it really hard for working women. So there's a bunch of privilege to assume that it's an obvious or easy alternative to formula.

Besides which, anyone who has already stopped producing can't suddenly start now.

New The breast years of their lives
In the mid-eighties I was present for a curious spat between an old friend and his wife, who was then in law school.

OF: Damn it, I told her to pick up some half-and-half. How does she expect me to drink my coffee without milk or half-and-half? (poking around the refrigerator) Hmmm. Maybe this would work.

RC: What’s that?

OF: It’s Pam’s breast milk. (their firstborn, obviously, was still nursing) Let me try it. It’s got to be better than nothing. [SPOILER: It wasn’t]

The thin grey fluid is poured into the coffee, which turns the color of spent dishwater.

OF (tasting): Ick!! (spits)

RC: Not good, huh? (OF pours contents of cup into sink)

****

I will not attempt to produce the exchange that occurred when, after a long day of studying tax law, OF’s wife returned to be bitterly reproached by her husband for failure to maintain dairy inventory, nor her startled and affronted reaction (grave offense had been taken) on learning that her fluids had been misappropriated for profane purposes. It got ugly…

curd-ially,

(Many people, reading this account, might assume my old friend to be more than a little self-absorbed. They would share this opinion with his ex-wife of three decades, although she herself has turned into an appalling piece of work during the intervening years.)
New I had a white Maine Coon kitten
Blue eyes. Join those two characteristics together and you end up with a deaf cat for the most part.

She was beautiful. And she wandered my apartment in the middle of the night crying. Please come hold me.

Yarhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

My first wife was pregnant with Ben at the time. Every time that cat screamed it hit the perfect frequency. Her nipples would squirt.
New Much variation possible in human breast milk
After all, us humans essentially live "wild" lives and the diet of the mother does influence the breast milk. But so do a lot of other things, not surprisingly. The milk provided for a brand-new newborn is different than when the kid is nearly 2.

I came across a documentary about it years ago. There are people who sell excess breast milk and other people who buy it.

Wade.
New apparently no one has heard of canned milk eldest used that
he was allergic to all powdered formula and fresh milk
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New Breastfeeding is also a form of birth control.
Alex

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

-- Isaac Asimov
New This is one of those topics...
...where, as a man, you're either actually medically qualified to have an opinion, or you get to sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up.

"No uterus? No opinion."
New Three things:
1. Not all women can produce enough milk for their children. My wife struggled to keep up with our daughter's needs. There are women that for one reason or another just can't get milk out. Breast cancer survivors anybody?

2. Work/life balance in this country is FUCKED. My wife was retreating into her office at lunchtime to pump milk; she used this time to finish paperwork. Not all women are given this benefit.

3. Sometimes, mom dies or the child is adopted out. You gotta feed them something...

New Thanks all for the various points of view
New Wife is a geriatic nurse with two kids and many many more nieces and nephews that she took care of
Told you to go f*** yourself.

We are a bunch of guys rambling on about women specific healthcare issues. And the woman in my life told me to tell you you're full of s*** and all women should be feeding the kids and if they're not then the kids should die. Pretty much. She believes in evolution in action.

The point of the exercise was not to express my view. It was to express my wife's view. And see what the response was. And it does not agree with the wife. But the wife is the woman in this mix.

New "Should" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.
New Then why is she a nurse?
Evolution in action would mean her job doesn't exist.

As for our responses, they were mostly, "You can't dictate that, there's reasons some women can't," and one, "You, as a man, don't belong in this conversation."

How would you interpret the results of your experiment?

New You know, you can be quite an arsehole sometimes.
So, congratulations: Seems you found yourself the perfect wife. "All women should be feeding the kids"?!? Tell your arsehole wife that they ARE: Sometimes from a bottle.

Because not all women CAN feed the kids from their tits. The pain and anguish my wife went through with our son... Arseholes, both of you.

[Removed: Suggestions for what evolution in action might entail for people like you and your wife.]

New Yep, I got the perfect wife
And yes she can be some serious evil sarcastic sometime. That's half the fun. And she's in the perfect profession. Every single one of her patients will die. Every one. And she gives them the best exit possible. Laughing as they go if they are coherent enough.
