Faking it in 5K
Scenario: Radeon 5700XT, LG 4K HDR monitor.
Turns out that there's a feature in the AMD driver called "Virtual Super Resolution".
Mainly designed for games, the idea is that if you've got (say) a 1080p monitor, the driver renders scenes at a higher resolution, and - in hardware, and unbeknownst to the game - scales it down to the monitor resolution. This yields a higher-quality image.
Well, it also works on the desktop! So I have configured Windows to render the desktop at 5K resolution, and the GPU does a fine job of neatly and smoothly scaling it to fit my 4K monitor.
And it looks, as we scientists say, fooking great.
(desktop scaling is set to what would otherwise be a frankly silly 300%)
