New Light recommendations please
I'm trying to figure out a centralized Android unit controlled light (which would end up being many lights in many rooms) that can have multiple Android units attached to it.

The point is I want to put cheap tablets up on the walls everywhere. All of them should be able to control the lights and anything else I have hooked up to the system. As much I love my current lights, and I really love them, they don't satisfy the end requirement of multiple universal controls mounted on the walls.

Any ideas?
New Is this a lights issue or a controller issue?
With those requirements, I'd try to have a single controller and all the other pads talk to it. I get the feeling you're looking for off-the-shelf, but would it be hard to just connect to a VM on a base unit from all the remote pads?

New Currently a lights issue
I have a house filled with lights. Six in one room 20 and another etc etc. These lights currently have multiple lights assigned to a single remote remote so each room has a single remote but that remote is very limited functionality and there's only one per room and I want to be able to control individual lights to each side of the couch and individual lights by the corner etc etc.

At that point I can use the Android app. The Android app allows me to group the lights as much as I want. But the Android app is on a single phone. I want multiple devices to be running an Android app to be able to control any light in the house.

So if I was to use this style of light and application then I assume I would set up a single control unit up on the wall and then remote into it and take control of it. Unless you're telling me I can set up VMs on an Android device which will then run the same application for each of the remotes to operate. Pointer for that please?
New Off the shelf vs DIY
The best tutorial I've seen is this one: https://www.instructables.com/DIY-Smart-Home-Automation/

The closest I've seen to buy it is this: https://www.control4.com/solutions/products/wireless-keypads
(They also have the smart lights and the base unit.) Pricey, and doesn't use tablets but rather configurable pads.

I suspect most consumers don't want the uber-flexible controller, so if that's a must-have then I think you're going to need to build it.

New Interesting
The commercial option is one of those that if you have to ask you can't afford it. No prices listed, call them and engage your project manager. A project manager?
New Ayup
When we were first married Jenn did network installs. Mostly commercial, but a couple residential that included home theater, security, and lighting. Those were big $$$ places on the lake. At least one of them, the work they did would have bought my house.

You would think that with Bluetooth and wifi things would be more plug and play by now but there just aren't enough people who really care. "I walk into the room and flip the switch. Why should I pay $20 for a lightbulb that I have to use my phone to turn it on?"

New Hue Bridges?
I don't know much about this stuff. I assume that your bulbs talk via some standard Wifi or BlueTooth protocol. Zigbee seems common and that's what Philips Hue uses.

A Hue Bridge ($60) apparently can control 50 lights. It sounds like that would be limiting for you.

https://www.hueessentials.com/ is an app that claims it can control things connected to multiple bridges, and there doesn't seem to be any issue with multiple Android devices connected to it (you could presumably put up cheap tablets while also having access via a phone). I haven't used it myself (we don't have any smart lights).

Someone on Balloon-Juice is always screaming the praises of high CRI LED bulbs. You may already know about such things, but in case you're not - they do exist and don't seem to be gigantically expensive. E.g. https://www.waveformlighting.com/high-cri-led

HTH a little. Let us know what you get.

Cheers,
Scott.
New You may wake up with dumb bulbs one day
Philips turned off support for Hue Bridge v1 with ~6 weeks notice. Anything that relies on a central service controlled/operated by a 3rd party is liable to suffer the same fate.
New Yeah, too complex
I want everything, I want it now, I want it cheap (enough), I want it reliable, screw the engineering triangle.

My current smart bulbs, infinite colors, in floor lamps are great. The floor lamps have three goosenecks so I get three of these bulbs which is plenty bright when combined for pretty much anything. They attach nicely to their cheapo remotes. Critically they will revert to being a normal light bulb with the switch on the back of the lamp turning off and on so no matter what I can always simply turn it off and on and bring it back with no remote.

There is no technology hurdle for anyone else in the household to turn the light on. Or off.

They are five bucks a piece when you buy them in packs of four with a single remote. I love these lights.

So I guess I'll stick with them and someday put up remote control Android centralized control unit for it. Until then 99% there.
New Good point. Thanks.

New It's an open source project that requires some level of technical skill to run
My guess is it will fly under the radar until they accidentally kill it by requiring some kind of cryptographic key signature between their IOT stuff and their servers in the name of "securing the experience" - doubt it will be specifically targeted, just something that happens.

New Thanks. Something to look forward to.
