My team did some of the coding for wireless access points to locate beacons with sufficient granularity to make it useful for telling position in aisles in stores. There was some comment from the team at the time and we were told that it was a "feature" that would allow stores to offer better suggestions to shoppers.

I think this was around '97. It just keeps getting better... meh...
