New If you ever wonder about the artifact @ 3:36...
Overall, this video is Wallonia's response to similar promotional efforts originating in Flanders where the other is smilirly forgotten. But you'll find that both consider Brussel's to be part of their turf. Geographically, it lies entirely in Flanders, but demographically, it is predominantly French speaking. This combination has been the perennial rallying cry for the separatists. Think "Jerusalem" for possibilities as to the resolution of this exercise :-(

And the artefact at 3:36 in the video is a quintessential Belgian construction. It is the result of what became known as "waffle iron" politics. One side could not get any economical infrastructure work done without equal compensation to the other side. In the late '70s, Flanders got the go ahead for major railway improvement. In return, Wallonia got the go ahead to build a new barge elevator to replace the ageing existing four. Problem was that the goods it was supposed to transport (coal and steel) were gone even by the time construction started in 1982 but the project just had to go ahead. It finally took until ~2000 before the canal on the upstream side was completed.

[And what the page does not mention is that during the first operational test, someone forgot to open a relief valve and the hydraulics promptly committed suicide...]
New I *did* wonder what that was.
It looked weird but it wasn't obvious its purpose was. Thanks for the info.

I thought boondoggles like that only happened when the US military was involved. ;-)

Cheers,
Scott.
