The Parent's Dilemma
Fast-forward to Xmas 2002.
Here's what J. Random Parent has to choose from:
Baseline console is the Gamecube. Small, cute, the undeniable Mario factor. Doesn't play DVDs. 150 quid.
PS2. Sleek. Sexy. Plays DVDs. Cool as fuck. Best controller in the history of the universe. 200 sheets. Games at a pony a throw.
XBox. Powerful. Ugly as fuck. Crap controller (even worse than the DC). Doesn't play DVDs. Expensive games. Three Hundred Smackers.
Yeah, XBox will come down in price. Think Nintendo and Sony won't notice? Remember, Sony are now making money on every PS2 sold - they've covered their development costs a long time since. The Gamecube is cheap as fook to make and didn't cost a fortune to develop. The XBox fulfils neither of these criteria.
People, this is NOT rocket science. XBox is dead, it just doesn't know it yet.
Sure, you can buy a thingy to let the XBox play DVDs. But who the fuck wants to lay out another 30 notes when you've just plunked down three ton for the thing plus one whole game when the same money gets you a DVD-playing PS2 plus a fistful of games?
Technical arguments count for nothing, by the way. Being more powerful didn't save the Saturn and it didn't save the N64.

When you write things like that ...
... you really need to include the link to the translator.
150 quid 200 sheets a pony a throw Three Hundred Smackers cheap as fook 30 notes three ton
Have you ever used the same slang twice in one post?

Quid, sheets, Smackers, notes = Pounds GB. Ton = 100 quid.
Don't know about the pony; five or ten quid, perhaps?
Oh, a quid is about a buck and a half, or two bucks, or thereabouts[*].
"Cheap as fook" = as fuck, obviously -- and oh, so fitting for me to be the one to explain it...
[*]: Which is much better than in the olden days, when it used to be twelve bob or something. And thruppeny farthing!

The biggest problem with XBox
is that when you've got yer console, yer DVD remote, yer additional controller and a bunch of games, you're staring a monkey in the face.

Not as daft as you're ugly-looking, are you?
Now, if you can tell me without Googling how much a bed and breakfast is, I'll be really impressed :)

Wazzat stick figure - a hieroglyph for "Help, I'm drowning"?
Thank you... No, not quite, fortunately! :-)
Hmm... WAG: Ten and six-pence? (As in, ten _shilling_, of course.)
No, I couldn't quite explain why -- it just kind'a sounds like it.

4 years of googling hasn't done you much good, has it?
Go on. Tell us that you haven't cried yourself to sleep every night for the past 4 years because of this thorny question.
We'll pretend to believe you.

If you have to ask anyway, what's the point of not Googling?
Besides, we all know how good you are with Google:
"I can't find the Grey Lodge to get directions."
"What did you Google for?"
"'beer'"

42...
err well, ((42 - 16) * 1)
I heard it used in a game of Darts. Thrower got a 5, a 20 and a 1. His opponent is was born and raised in, as he put, on the low side of London.
He was barely understandable. But the "Bed and Breakfast, you trying to (unintelligible mumble) me?" was more understandable.
But, I looked it up today to confirm the score was 26.
Then I also saw it being a 2 and 6 in regard to lodging and meal costs long ago. I didn't know that. But it does make sense.

Xbox 'packs' in Oz...
(apologies in advance, this post is a hodgepodge of half-formed ideas...)
I guess it was probably the same all over the world, but at launch it was very difficult to buy an Xbox without the DVD pack included. That's since changed - you can buy a plain xbox for only $649 (gasp). PS2 is currently $499. Gamecube arrives in a few more weeks, not sure how much.
The xbox games here are, erm, about 5 lobsters :)
As they tend to say in the console world - people don't buy add-ons. So it doesn't bode well for the xbox DVD kit, (or the PS2 Hard drive/Ethernet kit when it arrives)
The only xbox-not-dead guess I keep rabbitting on about is the M$ win at all costs approach. You'll see them free in boxes of cornflakes if it means market share.
(And hey, I *like* the DC controller :) )
Aside: I did a search on a [link|http://www.davidjones.com.au|local shop's web site] for 'Nintendo', seeking GameCube pricing. And the first item returned in my search was... hint: not the gamecube.
On and on and on and on, and on and on and on goes John.
