New X-Box sales starting to flag in US

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New The early adopters have adopted
The rest of us have resumed our collective shoulder-shrug. Guess things will just tick along until the Christmas price wars.

GameCube gets launched here in a month and a bit - wonder if the xbox price will drop around that time... Trouble is, since it's a M$ thing, they'll start including them in packets of Cornflakes if it means winning the market, using innovative They Will Stop At Nothing(tm) technology. :(
On and on and on and on,
and on and on and on goes John.
New A far bigger factor
A far bigger factor, to me anyway, is how amazingly bad Xbox sales have been in Japan. Take a gander at this.

Japanese Console sales from March 18th to March 24th:

PlayStation 2: 85,370
Xbox: 5,005
GameCube: 34,448
Game Boy Advance: 40,345
PSOne: 7,658
Game Boy Color: 2,439
Wonderswan: 2,772

Not only is Xbox selling a fraction of what PS2 is, but it is selling at a lower rate then PS1! This means that MS isn't even getting a foothold in Japan. MS had to have known that it would lose to the PS2 in Japan over the short term, but these numbers say they are not even putting up a fight.

Still, things are early in the game and MS has the money to keep fighting long after other companies would have packed up and gone home. It also has a long history of turning things around after the first product was a failure.

Jay
New From the Kid front
My kids love the xbox, they want me to go to circuit city so they can play the demo's. I have explained that we wont buy one because if sales take off the only thing available for sale will be Microsoft's product. They understand it is my money and I wont get one now, but they do love playing them.
thanx,

New Nope prefer xbox

New Also Microsoft has allied with the Devil
Vince McMahon and will be pretty exclusive on the newer wrestling games, which will be an interesting way to take over the gaming community by volume. WWF market share is huge and gates has made personal appearances on the WWF Promoting Xbox. Now laugh if you want the amount of kids that play wrestling games is huge, and if there is cross exclusivity, Gates has his foot in the door. The cost of that is having Vince in yer MS boardroom. Interesting times ahead.
thanx,
Bill
TAM ARIS QUAM ARMIPOTENS
New Vince and X
Vince had the XFl, remember what happened to it? It seems any Non-Wrestling stuff that Vince gets into, tends to flop. Esp things named with an X in their names. XFL and now the XBox. Flush the toliet Vince, the Xbox is done!

I am free now, to choose my own destiny.
New Want to know why?
It is that big oversized controller that they use. They should license the one from Sega, even the Dreamcast controller is smaller. The best I have seen are Gravis controllers. PS2 controllers are good as well. But the XBox has those two analog controllers on it. Reminds me of the old Coleco Tank video game that was a "Combat" ripoff that had you use two joysticks to move the tanks around, like a real tank?

Anyway if the PS2 and Gamecube are getting all the cool games, then the XBox is not going to sell as many units.

The best the XBox can do is get their games ported to the PC running Windows 98/ME/2000/XP and make up the losses in PC Game sales.

I am free now, to choose my own destiny.
New I belive 'Controller-S' is already on the cards
S for Smaller - I think it's same as the controller they supply for Japan. Can't say I followed to xbox news all that closely :)

I thought the Dremcast controller was chunky til I saw the xbox one. Dreamcast one is very comfy to use all the same, though a trifle heavy when loaded with a memory unit and a vibration pack.

Edit: What the S in Controller-S means
On and on and on and on,
and on and on and on goes John.

New Good
For a while I thought that it was Controller - Sega, as in Sega making a controller for the XBox. I heard that many companies already make a smaller controller for the XBox, but I was not able to find out who they are.

I am free now, to choose my own destiny.
New Sega is software-only these days
Which is bad, in so far as death of the Dreamcast,
but good, in so far as Sonic in GBA & Gamecube.
(Might be enough to sway me to get a GBA...)
On and on and on and on,
and on and on and on goes John.
New If you get a GBA
The screen is VERY dark when there's insufficient light. When you have sufficient light then you'll have to contend with major glare issues. I found the best place to play is in my kitchen where I have 2 fluorescent light fixtures that run parallel to each other. If I angle the screen to point between the light fixtures then I don't get any glare and can see the screen.

The little "plug in lights" don't work well at all. I've found [link|http://tritonlabs.com/|Afterburner], which I've got on order. It's an "internal lighting" solution that will requires the GBA to be opened up to be installed. Take the [link|http://www.portablemonopoly.com/|Portable Monopoly] link for more info(note: Hasbro's after them for using "Monopoly" and they're changing the links, not sure how much longer this will be valid - they're going to move everything to the TritonLabs site).

Darrell Spice, Jr.

[link|http://home.houston.rr.com/spiceware/|SpiceWare] - We don't do Windows, it's too much of a chore

New The lighting is why I don't have one yet.
I'd heard ever from their launch that people had been complaining about the screen - and once I saw one, I saw why. A friend of mine has one, and you're right, it needs *very* strong light to be any good at all. It's great in strong sunlight, if you don't mind getting sunburnt while you play :) The Worm Light add-on isn't bad, but it's really hard to avoid a patch of glare, and even then the brightness isn't uniform across the whole screen.

He's ordered an Afterburner, can't wait to see first-hand how well it works. In the meantime, I'll stick to playing Spy Hunter, Glaxian, and Bejwewled on my Visor Prism. Heh, at least it's backlit :-)

Edit: A typo in the Subject line - unforgiveable!
Edit2: *sigh* Subject line should be right this time...
On and on and on and on,
and on and on and on goes John.

New The Atari Lynx was the ultimate
I have one actually, eats batteries faster than a Windows CE powered device. :) Built in backlight, can even play in total darkness. It also "flips over" for left hand use. Designed by some guys who also worked on the Amiga, went to Epyx, and then sold out to Atari. They thought of almost everything on this unit, but Atari marketing ruined it. AFAIK it was the first color handheld video game.

New GBA lights
You might want to try [link|http://www.nakiusa.com/54526.html|THESE]. Spider-Man Action lights. Heh heh! Can it get any goofier?

New The Parent's Dilemma
Fast-forward to Xmas 2002.

Here's what J. Random Parent has to choose from:

Baseline console is the Gamecube. Small, cute, the undeniable Mario factor. Doesn't play DVDs. 150 quid.

PS2. Sleek. Sexy. Plays DVDs. Cool as fuck. Best controller in the history of the universe. 200 sheets. Games at a pony a throw.

XBox. Powerful. Ugly as fuck. Crap controller (even worse than the DC). Doesn't play DVDs. Expensive games. Three Hundred Smackers.

Yeah, XBox will come down in price. Think Nintendo and Sony won't notice? Remember, Sony are now making money on every PS2 sold - they've covered their development costs a long time since. The Gamecube is cheap as fook to make and didn't cost a fortune to develop. The XBox fulfils neither of these criteria.

People, this is NOT rocket science. XBox is dead, it just doesn't know it yet.

Sure, you can buy a thingy to let the XBox play DVDs. But who the fuck wants to lay out another 30 notes when you've just plunked down three ton for the thing plus one whole game when the same money gets you a DVD-playing PS2 plus a fistful of games?

Technical arguments count for nothing, by the way. Being more powerful didn't save the Saturn and it didn't save the N64.

... you really need to include the link to the translator.

150 quid
200 sheets
a pony a throw
Three Hundred Smackers
cheap as fook
30 notes
three ton

Have you ever used the same slang twice in one post?

New Quid, sheets, Smackers, notes = Pounds GB. Ton = 100 quid.
Don't know about the pony; five or ten quid, perhaps?

Oh, a quid is about a buck and a half, or two bucks, or thereabouts[*].

"Cheap as fook" = as fuck, obviously -- and oh, so fitting for me to be the one to explain it...

[*]: Which is much better than in the olden days, when it used to be twelve bob or something. And thruppeny farthing!

is that when you've got yer console, yer DVD remote, yer additional controller and a bunch of games, you're staring a monkey in the face.

by the time you've bought an xbox, extra controllers, dvd thingy, and a few games, you're almost up to a monkey.

New 42...
err well, ((42 - 16) * 1)

I heard it used in a game of Darts. Thrower got a 5, a 20 and a 1. His opponent is was born and raised in, as he put, on the low side of London.

He was barely understandable. But the "Bed and Breakfast, you trying to (unintelligible mumble) me?" was more understandable.

But, I looked it up today to confirm the score was 26.

Then I also saw it being a 2 and 6 in regard to lodging and meal costs long ago. I didn't know that. But it does make sense.

New Xbox 'packs' in Oz...
(apologies in advance, this post is a hodgepodge of half-formed ideas...)

I guess it was probably the same all over the world, but at launch it was very difficult to buy an Xbox without the DVD pack included. That's since changed - you can buy a plain xbox for only $649 (gasp). PS2 is currently $499. Gamecube arrives in a few more weeks, not sure how much.

The xbox games here are, erm, about 5 lobsters :)

As they tend to say in the console world - people don't buy add-ons. So it doesn't bode well for the xbox DVD kit, (or the PS2 Hard drive/Ethernet kit when it arrives)

The only xbox-not-dead guess I keep rabbitting on about is the M$ win at all costs approach. You'll see them free in boxes of cornflakes if it means market share.

(And hey, I *like* the DC controller :) )

Aside: I did a search on a [link|http://www.davidjones.com.au|local shop's web site] for 'Nintendo', seeking GameCube pricing. And the first item returned in my search was... hint: not the gamecube.
