Sound Off: Treo vs. Blackberry
Now that I'm a hot-shot, I find that my LG camera phone is sorely lacking in functionality. Crazy, I know you have a Treo...how do you like it? Who has a Blackberry? Which one should I get? I do a lot of text messaging to my boss, who is usually in depositions, I need to check emails and use the internet for mapquesting client locations.
Thanks for the input.

He has a Treo?
I'd a swore he had a regular phone.
I have a Treo 700p. (700p == Palm OS, 700w == Windows Embedded) I'll not have a 700w.
I like it well enough, its not an iPhone, but I like it all the same.
Especially if you look at the previous post here... regarding Opera Mini.
They ain't cheap.
Blackberry deices are pretty much the same. With Opera Mini you get the full internet, not a "WAP" enabled web.

Treo is Sooo last year.
At least for me. Had it at my last job.
It was a great gadget, but the core phone performance was iffy. Sound yucky, poor microphone, etc. Bluetooth headphone was a must. The email and instant messaging was fine.
This job I've currently got a Samsung Blackjack (oooh, pretty), but never enabled the email since our corp internet plan is very expensive. Having just determined I need email, I'm waiting for my Blackberry.
I think the Treo is painfully bulky compared to the other choices, but the user interface was very good.

Treo 700p here, too.
Never used a blackberry, though. Chose the treo after having a horrible experience with a Windows Mobile device - shoulda known better. It does webstuffs and email good. I recommend Google maps over mapquest, though - they have a standalone app for the treo (and others) that's really good.

You want to test-run a BlackBerry.
I have one part-time as it's our on-call phone. I'm firmly of the belief the BlackBerry UI designers ignored anything state-of-the-art in mobile phone UI and recreated everything. I find it horrible. Lots and lots and lots of scrolling and clicking with the wheel. Shortcuts feel a bit like an afterthought. Plus, it has a "custom" USB stack which Linux knows nothing about, and the version we have has a severely knobbled Bluetooth stack so I can't use that to transfer files to or from it, either (it knows only about Bluetooth headsets).
But the full keyboard is nice. :-)

Check out the iPhone
Apple has done a very nice job at designing this thing. It has a full on-screen keyboard that learns where you "think" the hot-spots are for the keys over time. Web browsing is done with the Safari browser, and the two-finger zoom is just plain cool.
Only if you have AT&T (Cingular), though.

Some quick hits, then
Say you're browsing a webpage in Safari, but you can't read the text because it's so small. Stick your thumb and forefinger together, place in the center of the screen, and move them apart. The webpage will "zoom in", and after a second, the text will refresh and get clearer for its new size. Doing the opposite will zoom out.
The exact same thing works for zooming in/out on photos.
Oh, did I mention that the resolution on the built-in camera is friggin' awesome?
Say you want to find the nearest Starbuck's. Use Safari to Google for it. Now say it's 9pm and you're not sure if they're still open. On the Google page, the store's phone number will show up as a hyperlink. Click on that, and you'll be asked if you want to call that number. You don't have to remember and type it.
Built-in Google maps. Built-in Yahoo weather. Built-in email client that connects via IMAP and POP. Sorry, this device does not talk Exchange (but if your email admin is nice and turns on IMAP, it works a treat.)
Oh, and it's an iPod, too. And just in case you forgot, it's also a phone.

You bet! While you're not sleeping, order an iPhone :)
A friend of mine has one (suitably unlocked, simfreed, jailbreaked and hows-your-fathered to work in Australia). A marvellous toy. Erm, I mean, essential communication tool :)

Treo 700p has *basically* the same keyboard.
You just have to remember how to use it.
