Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Yes.
There's a small segment of US telly that's quite good - the fancy-pants drama (Sopranos, etc) but I must say that my experience of US telly is that it's wall-to-wall shit.

I've even gone off Scrubs, because they can't not do that annoying-as-fuck moral lesson crap.

[link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0423661/|Green Wing] is much better, anyway.

TBH, if you take The Sopranos and seasons 1 and 2 of the X-Files out of the equation, I can't think of anything that's emanated from the US in the past 10 years that I've really wanted to watch. (I never went for that early naughties sci-fi stuff)

New "The Simpsons"
New But that "emanated" more than ten years ago.
New Two of the best shows on TV:
Battlestar Galactica and Firefly. Newsday and Time agree as well (on Battlestar, at least).

New I've been bored of Sci-fi since B5, pretty much
And both those shows bombed over here.

I watched an episode or two of Battlestar Galactica. It felt like a fancy-pants soap opera in space.

New You can't watch it that way.
You have to start with the mini series and watch them in order. They start at point A, and are headed towards point B, and the episodes happen in order between. It's not Star Trek where there's a New Planet every week where Kirk can get laid by interesting green alien women. In fact, the next season is the End. They get where they're going (or whatever), and the show is over.

Any show that devotes half of an entire season to explore exactly the nastiness of the whole "we're in a war, so anything goes including torture and absolute obedience is required" mindset, as a direct response to Abu Ghraib, is worth your time. BG takes a lot of risks with the writing and the plot, and they almost always win. There aren't too many shows out there that present the Bad Guys as Christians and the Good Guys as pagans. It's an exceedingly good mind twist as well -- you don't always know who the good and bad guys are, especially when you think you do. Smart and well-written.

BG isn't just a soap opera in space. It's better drama than you'll see on any other show, plus real physics (fighters are *inertial* and have attitude jets, even -- they don't use their "space wings" to swoop around in tight turns) and sciencey goodness.

Firefly was canceled over here by the numbnuts at Fox. It's the second best show I've ever watched after Battlestar. Granted, the show has very much an American mythos, so it might be something Brits just don't get. However, to me it's smart and funny and excellent characterization doin's.

New Burn Notice
on USA. What more could you want...ex-spy, cool guns and Bruce Campbell.
Smile,
Amy
New I think someone's editing history...
I remember that debuting two or three years ago on Australian TV. Yet Wikipedia and IMDB says it only debuted a few months ago? The descriptions are even the same. Wierd. Very wierd.

New Re he heallly?
Can you get the DVD of it there yet? Would love to buy it for my son. ;)

Amy
New Never looked.
I know I watched it but it wasn't anything wonderful, which probably says more about my taste in TV than the quality of US TV. OTOH, if I'm right, then it may have tanked in the US, too, and the version this year is a re-imaging of the concept.

Yes, I know you're trying to have a lend of me. :-)

New Tanked?
Au contraire, mon frere. It is still going as a mini-series. There is one episode left. Seems to be doing rather well, AFAICT. Understand, however, it *is* on cable, so not under the same pressure at network TV.

Also, my son wants to pursue a career in law enforcement. We kinda get into those kind of shows. Ya know, parent/child bonding ;)

As far as quality, it won't win any awards, but it is entertaining and is on the upper-end of intelligent. You can't be stupid and be a spy, n'est-ce pas? :-)
Smile,
Amy
New I meant the mysterious one I saw a few years ago.
Not the one showing now.

New What?
I thought you said it was the same thing? I are cornfused.

Oh well. That's what happens when they recycle the titles for shows. :0)
Smile,
Amy
New I don't know!
Like I said - I'm sure there was a 'Burn Notice' airing on Aussie TV _several years ago_ with the same story-premise and the same setting. Yet it doesn't appear in the Usual Places! There's only references to the 07 show.

New I misunderstood you
When you said "mysterious", I thought you meant that the show was of the "mystery" variety. You meant that it is mysterious in that you know you saw it, but can't prove it ever aired in Oz.

Sorry...brain disconnect.

Amy
New Ignore him
Though most TV that comes from the US is shit, there has been some good stuff since Babylon 5, including sci-fi. This is from someone who refused to watch Star Wars episodes 2 and 3 because episode 1 was a hanging offence. I like the CSI series, the Law and Order series, Battlestar Galactica and Firefly. Never mention Enterprise.

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?
- Mark Renton, Trainspotting.
New House and Rescue Me.
Madmen is pretty good too.
New House usually annoys me.
He's an interesting, quirky character. But I cannot believe that any hospital has a senior doctor and 2-3 underlings (residents? I haven't watched the show enough to know what they are) dedicate days or weeks to a single patient, call up any test they can think of, etc., etc. Most of the doctors I've come across have about 30 patients at a time and if you're in the hospital (even in the ICU) you're very lucky to see them for 2 minutes once a week.

I haven't seen "Rescue Me" or "Madmen".

Cheers,
Scott.
