New I need a desk, too
I went out to Office Depot and OfficeMax last night, and looked at their collections of office furniture. The only thing I found that was a real possibility at OD was something that looked like cubicle furniture. That is, it was functional, but not exactly pretty. Sitting at it would remind me of being a member of a cube farm society. That's not exactly something I want sitting in my living room, honestly.

OfficeMax, however, had [link|http://www.officemax.com/max/solutions/product/prodBlock.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&expansionOID=-536897599&prodBlockOID=1611575442|something that caught my eye]. The pictures they have on the site are really pretty crappy, but I'd be looking at the main desk, computer desk, and one or two of the corner pieces. Don't want the chair, file cabinet, or bookcase.

Anyone out there in the IGM have input/experience with this type of furniture?

New Looks IKEA-esque.
We've got an IKEA office table (birch top, black legs) in our office. It has a small shelf above. I don't think they sell it anymore. It's quite sturdy. (I don't like any of the similar stuff IKEA has now.)

Our computer table is something I picked up at OfficeMax or Staples about 15 years ago. White laminate over particle board with an upper rail and mounting platform for a monitor. It came with a keyboard drawer too. Both our PCs and Macs can be used (I added another keyboard drawer and a monitor arm for the Mac) at the same time. The legs are black metal tubes which form an inverted U. There's a "modesty panel" in the back that also provides some rigidity.

Both of these have worked well. I'm probably going to modify the computer table eventually, to add some shelves and remove the cross-bar used for the monitor. It gets in the way too much, so the monitor will either go on a shelf or another monitor arm.

The glass surfaces on the linked items looks nice - easy to clean too. I would make sure the shelf is high enough so that it doesn't take away too much work area, though. If you like keyboard drawers, mounting one might be a problem with it, though.

HTH a bit. Good luck!

Cheers,
Scott.

Well, the computer desk comes with a keyboard drawer...But my main system is a laptop at this point. I'm not sure I'd be using the keyboard drawer just yet.

Ease of cleaning will definitely be appreciated...I also like the "open" feel of the desk. The movable "side drawers" that are an option with the desk are something I'll look into getting. Perhaps a couple of those...

New In the same boat
Work from home, current 'desk' is one of those 6' long white folding tables from Sam's Club. Haven't ever seen anything at the office supply stores I'd consider worthy of being called furniture, most of it's pressboard with laminate finishes. I have found some nice stuff at local furniture stores - American Furniture Warehouse, Oak Express, and Woodley's Fine Furniture - but it gets pricey and I think all of those are local to the Denver area. I guess I'm suggesting maybe try some furniture stores, don't limit yourself to office supply retailers.

Good Luck

New I don't have space for regular desks . . .
. . so I always build my own out of 3/4 inch chip board cut to the exact contour that will maximize space usage and surface them with vinyl floor tile.
I bolt a 2x4 to the wall to anchor the edge to. These desks are extremely durable and last for many years. Drawers sets that fit under them can be purchased if needed.

Shown in the photo is the office corner desk, probably built about 8 years ago. A corner of the large main island (which accommodates two workers comfortably) is visible in the lower left corner.
