I'm confused.
When does the 'cunning" part come in?
That was nothing but safe and slow. A little dull, but it eventually might pay off.
I swear, one of these days I'm going fly out there, take you to a bar, get you good and drunk, and show you how it's done.

The cunning part . . .
. . is arranging to be in the right place when there's a break and having been attentive enough to know what subject matter will ease me into the conversation. No, I can't pry teachers apart, but I have some experience dealing with them so I can sneak in and out of their conversations when there's a little slack to take up. After all, even teachers occasionally need to refresh their drinks or powder their noses.
I do have to be opportunistic because I can't participate fully in teacher to teacher conversation. I don't know the names of the schools and their locations, the names of the administrators, the current policies and personalities being griped about etc. so I have to be creative.
And between opportunities I talk to other people.

Oh I am so sorry for being serious and dull.
I'm working on a problem here. My problem is not social ineptness but exposure, and that's what I'm trying to fix. I do best within communities where I'm known and trusted. Unfortunately, for various causes, I lost all my communities and I'm trying to build new ones.
And getting drunk just does not work well for me in a social context - though if I'm with someone, getting smashing drunk together now and then is fine (I become a rather euphoric when intoxicated).
And if you want to get into a fight I left you one down in Science.

So, does this make you
a bright language specialist working on the circus, otherwise known as a cunning linguist working on a cunning array of stunts?

You got that backwards.
The trick is to move in and replace the one that's had to make the trip.
