New Any word on gunman's identity and/or motive?

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

New Monday the 16th...
I noticed in high school that Monday the 16th often seemed much worse than Friday the 13th. :-(

I hope that the politicians and pundits don't hoist their flags on these poor peoples' corpses. I also hope that a thorough investigation is done and that people don't jump to knee-jerk conclusions about why he/they did it and "obvious" ways to prevent it from happening again.

Regards,
Scott.
New Listened to Special Report
Why didn't you lock down campus?
Why aren't there police in the buildings?
Why no metal detectors?

This is an open COLLEGE campus with "100s" of buildings. 9000 on-campus students and 14,000 commuting students.

Let's put our schools inside the prisons, with walls and armed guards...

Condolences to all who lost friends or relatives
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. (Herm Albright)

New Yep, it's all over the news this morning...
I'm watching news coverage of that massacre at a college in Virginia yesterday and marveling at how I managed to miss all that while it unfolded yesterday...

Normally I'm a news hound..I watch the FOX Ch 2 11:00 news in the morning, then the CBS Ch 4 local 12:00 news after that. If we had cable, CNN would be on my speed-remote, too bad that we don't have cable. ;) Then later, I watch the CBS local news 5:00 at 5, the CBS Evening News at 5:30 and John and I watch the CBS local news at 6:00 p.m. Then John and I watch the FOX Ch 2 9:00 news and then the CBS Ch 4 10:00 news.

Can you believe that yesterday morning I missed almost all of the early morning news, and didn't really learn the magnitude of the campus shooting until 5:00 p.m.???

Talk about being disconnected from reality! I had been on the computer, but was sending out a short e-mail delaying my monthly letter, and hadn't even been on here or any other site where it might be talked about.

Then I was on the phone talking to relatives some and then to mom, so I missed the 11 and 12 news both. I heard something briefly at 11 that there was a shooting on some campus, but only a couple people were dead. My assumption later on that report was it was about the two shot first in the dorm.

Later that evening, I was able to finally hear the whole story, and was shocked that I had been right here, surrounded by TV and Internet and never knew the severity of this until later. I was catching up on some regularly taped video, and on the computer but not anywhere near a news site.

But now that I know the severity, and now that I have had time to let it all sink in, it all hit me... this is that DREADED week of the year... the week of Hitler's birthday.

April 19th... the day a tyrant was born... the day Waco burned, the day of the Oklahoma Bombing... the day before Columbine was front page news...

This kid was just a little early... which has been the norm lately, a little early, a little late...but always near that date on the calendar.

It's only the 17th.... it's going to be a long week... why do I have chills?

Not a clue why you think so, but if you can find some humor in this tragedy I guess that's your perogative.

You know, I normally dont post on here much anymore, but when I come in here with genuine emotion, and post something with raw feelings, while having memories of fear and terror and thoughts of being on my honeymoon while in a hotel room watching the Columbine horror...why would I expect anything less than for someone to ridicule me or tear me down.

I see nothing's changed.

New tearing you down?
You shoulda seen the first draft, sweetheart. Took a good year, eighteen months off my life to throttle it back like that: what was posted was like unto a father's tender kiss upon the brow by comparison, you betcha.
but when I come in here with genuine emotion, and post something with raw feelings...
Well there you are! Leading epidemiologists agree that raw feelings are up to 500 times more dangerous than cooked feelings: why the salmonella risk alone...!

It's the water. It's got to be the St. Louis water.
Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.
New It's not a dreaded week.
Lots of bad things happen all the time. Any week of the year can be shown to be "dreaded".

Silly.

New Sure it is - annual income taxes due

We posture as apostles of fair play, as good sportsmen, as professional knights-errant-- and we throw beer bottles at the umpire when he refuses to cheat for our side...We save the black-and-tan republics from their native [statesmen]--and flood them with "deserving" democrats of our own. We deafen the world with our whoops for liberty--and submit to laws that destroy our most sacred rights...We play policeman and Sunday-school superintendent to half of Christendom--and lynch a darky every two days in our own backyard.

Bad shit happens. Be thankful it didn't happen to you. But most of all, be aware that much badder shittier shit is happening to a lot more people all the time, elsewhere.

New Yeah, but we'll be safer if we do that.
This liberty thing is just too scary for most of us.

New This is a horrible tragedy
but on the radio this morning I heard an audio clip from yesterday's news conference at the White House by Dana Perino. What the hosts said after it (and I'm paraphrasing) "this is a tragedy but let's not allow it to be used to take away our right to own guns".

I'm sorry, but these morning radio hosts absolutely DID NOT need to say that AT ALL. I think what they said was cold-blooded and reprehensible.

After checking the White House web site, here is the quote:

As far as policy, the President believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed.

It appears that she was being baited by the reporter on official 2nd Amendment policy.

New Both sides already out in force
Both the "ban all gun" and "everybody should be armed at all times" crowd are out in force.

Neither of those groups felt the need to know anything about the attack before staking out their position and taking it public.
