The first caller to the station in Washington said that Klein must be "off his rocker." The second congratulated him and added: "Not only do you tattoo them in the middle of their forehead but you ship them out of this country ... they are here to kill us." Another said that tattoos, armbands and other identifying markers such as crescent marks on driver's licenses, passports and birth certificates did not go far enough. "What good is identifying them?" he asked. "You have to set up encampments like during World War Two with the Japanese and Germans." At the end of the one-hour show, rich with arguments on why visual identification of "the threat in our midst" would alleviate the public's fears, Klein revealed that he had staged a hoax. It drew out reactions that are not uncommon in post-9/11 America. "I can't believe any of you are sick enough to have agreed for one second with anything I said," he told his audience on the AM station 630 WMAL ([link\|http://www.wmal.com/\|http://www.wmal.com/]), which covers Washington, Northern Virginia and Maryland "For me to suggest to tattoo marks on people's bodies, have them wear armbands, put a crescent moon on their driver's license on their passport or birth certificate is disgusting. We need to separate them, we need to tattoo their arms, we need to make them wear the yellow Star of David, we need to put them in concentration camps, we basically just need to kill them all because they are dangerous." While most are not so radical as to support deportation, there are far too many who are willing to accept that all Muslims should be put under special scrutiny and automatic suspicion. This creates an atmosphere in which Muslims are likely to not feel accepted no matter how long they have been here, and are thus that much more likely to support the radicals. Creating the very problem we where trying to avoid in the first place. Jay

Remember, it was strongly debated in the time of the American Revolution whether the official language of this land should be English or German. Since no settlement could be reached no offical language was appointed. Dollar, Thaler, tolar, daalder, daler - it's all the same. We are basically a country of "Anglo-Saxons" (Germans) speaking a Germanic language and incorporating many German traditions (like Christmas trees) - plus plenty of Scandinoovians (Germanic) and various Baltic peoples and mixed Slavs who mingled with Germans for thousands of years as the borders changed (generally monthly, or even weekly at times). If the English were not so heavily Germanic (Anglo-Saxon) would they not have fallen overnight like the French? Are we capable of concentration camps and mass extermination? You betchya! They attacked Great Britian and we did nothing. Japan attacked us and we declared war on Japan! (Not Germany) Only then, did Germany declare war on us and then we responded.

I don't imagine that he has a wide spectrum of listeners (but I don't know). Talk radio generally has audiences that are homogeneous. I wouldn't take the comments as being reflective of a wide swath of America (or even of the right wing in America). It is disconcerting, though. Cheers, Scott.
