PS3 costs less than Stand alone Blu-Ray players.
And does more, better than the XBOX360.
Wii nunchaku controller setup is unique to say the least.
It is a well built machine to say the least. Slightly under powered, but then the GC was too.
The PS3 does HDMI Video, Component Video, Analog Video, Movies, Music, Photos shows, Inter-Web access, built-in wifi and wired LAN, Games 7 bluetooth game controllers - 16 bluetooth devices total, USB ports, user upgradeable hard-drive (though a laptop hard-drive), boots linux (you need a keyboard and mouse for it), running Linux gives you access to Emulators ie; MAME, GBA, Sega...etc
For less than the price of a stand alone Blu-Ray player, why not?
I won't do an XBOX-360 not for a long time. Wii might be doable short-term. PS3 is a want for me.

If you buy a Blu-Ray Player, buy a PS3.

You're not worried about DRM issues?
(I'm just musing - I haven't looked into this in any detail yet.)
One the one hand, being able to run Linux on it would potentially allow one to get around any DRM issues. On the other hand, I would think having a Blu-Ray player in a PC would give one more options. On the other paw </Hugh-mode>, a bird in the hand and all that.
I'm still not convinced that now's the time to be seriously considering a PS3. I remember that one of the early appealing aspects of the PS2 was the DVD player. That benefit sounded great in principle, but stand-alone players were soon available with more features for a lower price. What with the format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, without an additional compelling need (like the desire for an all-in-one networked box) it strikes me as a risky proposition.
Cheers, Scott. (Who thinks Blu-Ray players will drop in price very quickly once they get better at making the blue lasers.)

The key here is the...
Ability to run Linux.
The DRM built-into the Blu-ray drive and the PS3 are about as effective as DVD CSS was/is.
Not that I am saying they suck, just that will be easily worked around in short order. I also believe that Blu-Ray will drop in price. But, that will be more than a year off. I also of the thinking that after the first of the year will be a better time to buy... Jan-March is a LEAN time for MOST electronics sellers.
And a Blu-Ray drive in a PC... what do you think a PS3 really is? If you gots Linux, you gots all the potential you need.

I don't care about any of that.
I'm not into this "digital hub" thing at all; I barely watch any TV and I listen to music through speakers whilst on the computer, otherwise on the iPod.
For me, the "which console" question is a no-brainer. I've got GC games which I still like playing (and, in the case of NFS:MW, haven't yet finished) and I like the tiny form factor.
And the cost. \ufffd179 versus the far side of \ufffd400 for the others.
Blu-Ray is an irrelevance to me, given that I haven't even watched all the DVDs in the house yet and don't have an HD TV (and won't for many years to come).
DVD will suffice for yonks yet.

PS/3 is performance of a supercomputer at the price of an PC
so says iSuppli - they are very impressed with the internals. Add the fact that it can run Linux, hmm, yes, very interesting (I don't care about the gaming aspect, but the Cell chip is very interesting.)
Blu-ray writers are interesting on the PC for backup and storage - 50G for starters, promising 200G. HD-DVD has significantly lower capacity.

Yeahbut...
At the moment, it looks like the rewriteable (RE) disks are limited to 25 GB, the 50 GB disks are write once - at least according to [link|http://www.tapeonline.com/blu-ray.aspx|this] store. At $34.10 for 50 GB of write-once storage, it's not compelling to me at the moment - especially when one can get a 80 GB hard drive for [link|http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144102|$42] or less, and especially since few other drives will be available to use the disks for a while (e.g. if the drive dies, where will you be able to read the info?).
Cheers, Scott. (Who thinks the format is interesting, but I'm not willing to pay early-adopter prices just yet.)
