New Microsoft and Novell are cutting a deal.
SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT - News) is entering into an agreement with Novell Inc. (NASDAQ:NOVL - News) that will allow open-source Linux software to work with the company's Windows software, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

Novell and Microsoft will work together to develop technologies to allow users to run both Windows and Suse Linux, a version of the operating system sold by Novell, the Journal said, citing people familiar with the companies.

New Not April 1....embrace and extend
wanna bet the new Vista licenses will allow it to work with only Novell?

Did you see their licenses regarding VM's?
New Wouldn't be surprised. Mary Jo Foley has some more info.

She's got 3 articles about it.

New Wow
Shows you just how short memories are in big business. Novell got kicked in every sensitive spot they have, and spent much of the 80's losing a very dirty battle to Microsoft. Now they are going to turn their backs and hand MS a knife.

Normally MS cuts deals like this to steal a companies technology, but I don't see how that can be the case here. So I'm guessing they are going with the death of 1000 paper cuts. That is where they cut a deal with some company to provide a joint product, and then insure that their end never quite works right. This lets them position themselves in that market, while making sure that the technology doesn't look as good as going straight Windows.

New You, sir, are a cynic

That pretty much sums it up. Just try sometime next year to pitch a large corporate client on going with Ubuntu or even Red Hat. The "obvious" reaction will be, "Well, the supported way to do that is Microsoft / Novell." Then when it doesn't work, the "obvious" reaction will be, "I guess Linux isn't ready after all."

The bowels of the Beast are so intuitively ingrained in these parts that.. youse guysngals can extrapolate Bally's wet dreams - in your sleep.

Imagine.. if just a few suits ackshully read (say, for a start: just Andrew's nicely annotated aaxnet.com summary of how we all got Toy Software Forever?)

Sure.. a Suit not Being a Suit!

New The problem is ....
that while every tech and his brother knows Microsoft isn't to be trusted and that in the end, it'll backstab Novell...

A bean-counter...who cares only what the next quarter (or next couple of quarters), look at the deal and points out, "Hey, it add legitimacy against RedHat and it's bound to be good for a couple of mill."

Of course, by then, said bean-counter will be long gone.
New The thing is...
Not that I condone what Novell has allowed Microsoft to hold the knife and position it where it is going to be...

Just that, if you are going to get proper exposure and usage and familiarity and cooperative Linux implementations you have to sign The deal with Satan while wearing a lead alloy lined, asbestos suit, with a special enhanced back and pooper shield.

As a special procaution1, never look over the shoulders whilst wearing that suit. It gives Microsoft the chance to do all the dirty work they want, having little effect on the real product, except more exposure, upping usage, gaining familiarity and making the "host" look far worse than it really is.

IOW, this allows the "Brilliantly Cut, Flawless, Colorless, Clear Diamond" to be uncovered or discovered in the dogshit that surrounds it.

Also, based on my experience, Linux DOES run better as a hosted OS (in Windows) than Windows running as the hosted OS (on Linux or Windows). It boggles my mind as to why, though I do have a good idea why.

1 == Yes, I know the "proper" spelling.
