New Carrefour
First "[link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrefour|hypermarket]" I ever saw. There had to be at least 50 registers across the front. The grocery section in the corner looked tiny from a distance, but when you got close you realized it was bigger than any grocery store you'd ever seen.

county-sized floor . . .

Loved the 'political' essay \ufffd cum "how Executive minds ~work" -
Proliferation of Big Giant Corporations means: which?

1) Acceleration towards a socialist government?

2) Beating competition via political discourse, not bizness numbers?

3) Always trusting the paranoid mindset of your Execs?

ANS: All three.

After all, one old defn. of genius is, the capacity for holding two contradictory ideas in mind - at once. How much Larger must be the jelloware of the top Suited-Ones-in-Suites who must juggle three??

New The new Walmart's are that size
My first "hypermarche" experience was actually in Brussels in the early 80s. We had a "GB" up the street which sold everything...and it had a restaurant AND a fast food place...the restaurant sold buckets of mussels and beer...it was a popular place.

You could even get a "Royale with cheese"

New Auchan here
I used to shop at the [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auchan|Auchan] hypermarket, they opened their first US location in Houston soon after I moved here. The 2nd US location opened in 2000. Unable to compete with Wal Mart and Target, Auchan closed both locations in 2003. The 2nd location was used by FEMA as a disaster recovery center after Katrina and Rita.

New According to urban legend
Sam Walton walked into an Auchan years ago, was extremely impressed, and said to himself, "I gotta do this too." Thus was born the Wal-Mart/grocery store combination.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

New Biggs
In the late 1980s I occasionally shopped at [link|http://www.biggs.com|Biggs] on the east side of Cincinnati. (The web page is unresponsive to me at the moment.) It was, er, Big.

Cheers,
Scott.
