New I like the range on it
New Synchronicity -
En passant, on NPR today - comments on the Tesla, intimations that "he's" behind the Docu-Movie, Who Killed the Electric Car? {aside from thermodynamics and the use of fossil fuels to recharge yada cf. 'hydrogen-as-panacea' for similar problems in cognition, when a whole culture has never heard of F=MA.)

Mention of \ufffdber-geek David Brin (?) and others, as having been among the many waiting.. for someone to do their homework --> right on through marketing to a tested group of likely purchasers / getting the logistics for support Right, etc. Possibly some links there would cover what I heard.

Was paying only 75% attention - realizing that I ain't never gonna be buying so expensive a toy, aimed squarely at the BigRebated-5% (those who are, currently engaged in seeking their Alt Summer Homes via the Bush-RepoMatic windfall - perhaps keeping that Real Estate bubble inflated for a few more quarters /months?)

But then.. GM actually *crushing* all those EV-1s -!- now THERE is a classic intermixing of Dilbertian PHB Repo-Neoconism, wrapped in the triumph of Marketing over substance. And all from the imagination that: you Can kill the Memory.
Do all Bizness grads flunk Psych 101?
..thought it was mainly the CIEIOs who never felt the need to learn anything about the marks.

New David Brin is most certainly a geek.
Sci-fi author, astronomer, and [link|http://www.davidbrin.com/tschp1.html|political commentator].

He's a mensch.
Hurt me if you must, but let the duckie go!
New Re: a nice car I cant afford (yet)
No doubt it'll be pricey.. but how much? Any ideas? I don't see them revealing on the website...

New $80k
[link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_Roadster|wikipedia]
Tesla CEO Martin Eberhard has speculated that it would "cost between $85,000 and $120,000." Eberhard recently revealed that the price would be in the range of a Porsche 911 Carrera S, which is roughly $80,000.

New looks good to me
I'd trade off some acceleration for more range and passenger capacity. Still it's a very attractive vehicle. I'm sure they won't be able to make them fast enough.
Have fun,
Carl Forde
New Here he comes with the wet blanket...
I'll believe it when I see it.

It strikes me that the Tesla car is counting on achieving its goals by 1) improvements in the batteries compared to [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_EV1|EV-1], and 2) the light weight of the Lotus platform. There's something to that, but I think their claims are a bit too high to be taken seriously at this point.

How much is the cheapest Lotus these days? The Elise MSRP is $43k. The Exige MSRP is $51k. They're going to have a smaller run of more complicated cars, take out the motor but add a bunch of expensive and heavy batteries, make it safe in collisions, quick to recharge, reliable, and sell it for $80k? And make money? And Toyota or Honda can't do this?

I don't think so.

Color me a skeptic. The car business has attracted too many people who claim to have the magic future vehicle who only turn out prototypes. Remember the [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_W2|Vector W2]?

[link|http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/07/20/0021209|Slashdot] has an article on it too.

I think batteries are going to have to get a lot cheaper or a lot better for a fast, 250 mile range electric car to cost less than $100k.

I'd love to be proven wrong though. :-)

Cheers,
Scott.
New I think the root is much simpler -
A general failure to recognize (except by those who didn't flunk Science 101) that, merely moving around your topical means of energy-STORAGE: fails to address the PROBLEM.

(Do the red-half of Muricans '06 still believe that there's a magic pill for your gas tank which multiplies mileage by 3X.. but the car companies are suppressing it?)

I submit that, the mere act of reading beyond an intro which begins like the above - indicates severely damaged neural processes. And explains Shrub.. as well as the nuking of gay flag-burning whales by Constitutional Amendment.

New TTAC on the latest Tesla news.

By Robert Farago
August 14, 2007

This website has been skeptical of Tesla Motors\ufffd claims for their lithium-ion-powered Roadster since day one. While some readers think we\ufffdve \ufffdhad it in\ufffd for the California-based car company, rest assured TTAC is an equal opportunity muckraker. Anyway, yesterday, when Martin Eberhard revealed that he\ufffdd relinquished Tesla's top job, we held fire to avoid accusations of smug satisfaction. But Eberhard\ufffds email to Tesla customers piqued our interest. As Tesla has yet to deliver a single customer car, by thy words thy shall be known.

New plug-in hybrid Mini looks interesting
[link|http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/08/the_hybrid_mini.php|Electric Mini: 0-60 in 4 Seconds]
A British engineering firm has put together a high-performance hybrid version of BMW's Mini Cooper. The PML Mini QED has a top speed of 150 mph, a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds. The car uses a small gasoline engine with four 160 horsepower electric motors \ufffd one on each wheel. The car has been designed to run for four hours of combined urban/extra urban driving, powered only by a battery and bank of ultra capacitors. The QED supports an all-electric range of 200-250 miles and has a total range of about 932 miles (1,500 km). For longer journeys at higher speeds, a small conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) is used to re-charge the battery. In this hybrid mode, fuel economies of up to 80mpg can be achieved.

I'm lucky to drive once a week so I say to heck with fuel economy! :-)

Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New bad choice, the steering wheel is on the passengers side :-)
