Seems kind of silly. I think people should learn in an automatic, get a few years practice, and then learn to drive a stick.
Years ago my sister was trying to learn to drive. She's 3 years older than me. I was probably (hhhmmmm 18?). She was on her 3rd permit.
We were in my father's Cadillac. I was letting her drive.
Spent a while in the slow 25 MPH development, then went to the
4 lane road, 2 lanes in each direction, 45 MPH speed limit.
She's on it for 5 seconds, sees the oncoming traffic, and starts screaming:
THEY DON'T KNOW THAT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE!!!!!!!
I couldn't handle any more panic. That was the last time I tried
to teach her how to drive. That was 22 years ago. She's lived in
a major city with no car the whole time.
