New Why should sex ed be any different from the rest of ed here?
Remember, there are only two states in the entire union with less educated populations than Indiana. They are Mississippi and Alabama. That's right, even Kentucky and West Virginia have higher percentages of their populations with 4 year degrees or higher. But I digress. I was horrified to hear my 15 year old (an honor student) say, "You can only get STD's from blood." I said, "You know better than that. We've talked about this for years." She replied, "Well, that's what my friends say." And how, exactly, does one respond to that? In hindsight, I think she was just yankin' my chain, but one never knows. Still, her mother and I (I think) set her straight. The school sure as hell isn't giving them *any* information at all.

Ah, Indiana. Damned stupid and Damned Proud of it. We're more Red than anyone.

Note to self: Hmmm, must google. I wonder if any state, other than Indiana, has voted for the Republican Presidential nominee every election cycle since 1964?

bcnu,
Mikem

New well "ed" is a notional thingy
bought some vino for my sister, had a glass last night with dinner. My 7yo pipes up "thats a drug its gonna make you have a heart attack and die!" putting on my dinner snarl I reply "Doctors say you should drink 2 glasses of wine everyday for your heart, you teachers are confused" wife puts on her husband snarling face and sez " get me 2 bottles then I will drink my heart healthy or would you rather my little girl grow up and think booze is bad for you?" so I took the honorable way out and shaddap. So talk over with yer missus and approach the girls carefully.
thanx,

New Carefully, indeed.
I guess every father of a daughter goes through this. In the last year my eldest and I have grown quite apart. The youngest (now 13) was always mommy's and the eldest was always daddy's - not our choice - theirs. Now roles have completely flip-flopped. I'm sure I'll lose the other one in a couple of years as well. I'll admit I'm not handling adolescence in my eldest very well.

New Parental Goal
As dad to 5 daughters the goal is:

They turn 18 and graduate high school; sober, clean (not strung out on drugs) and without providing us with grandchild.

Anything else is a bonus.

3 down, 2 left.
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail ... but, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "Damn...that was fun!"
New My airport manager's advice.
Was talking to him about raising kids. He said, "Don't worry too much about not giving them enough, not being there for them enough, etc. They're going to grow up and hate you anyway, so why worry?" :-)

New Re: Why should sex ed be any different
As my couple forays into IndianaLaLaLand were mainly confined to a college town (Bloomington), a few hours in CarRaceCity and stops at places with catfish: clearly I'm as iggerant of the natives as are the natives er, iggerant-generally, perhaps so as to Maintain the Tradition (?)

But knowing My Gramma\ufffd, and that she wrote a song, Indiana We're Coming Home (and that some bought it) - I can only surmise that - -

*You* are (for what Ever compelling {sob} Reasons) {Y.P.B.} exposing your psyche daily to a toxic environment.. with consequences to Consciousness, a one may only cringe to imagine :-/

Get Thee even to a Nunnery - would have to be mo-Bettah Hence!
The Real Estate clan calls it a ReLo but I'd call it ... the eighth element of the Periodic Chart - Oxygen driving out accumulated Carbon Sanctimonioxide.

(A rarely isolated compound which is produced by large crowds of inbreeding Knownothings whose sole aim is to spread their spores to the winds.)
It is said that one milliliter of pure Sanctimonium could assassinate 10-E12 little grey cells; merely opening a similar vile vial in the Superdome produced:

4 dead - head-butting each other in a race to tear down some goal posts sunk in concrete.
12 maimed for life in UAV races for the exit, enroute to trashing Downtown areas.

New Once in a while, you run into a progressive.
And then s/he leaves after a couple of years. :0(

I've lived in worse places, and some better. I've pretty much decided that the best thing to do is stay at least 1,500 ft above Indiana as much as is humanly possible. Up there with the ground rapidly retreating under your little airplane, it doesn't seem so bad...
