New I may be a bad judge of this...
...simply because I love this story, as well as Matilda and James and the Giant Peach. I'm also a pretty large fan of Burton and his style. (Glad to see another "cartoon" on the way). This picture is certainly visually stunning.

I only saw one hint of what the reviewers keep complaining of "Wacko Jacko" influence on the character...at the very beginning. It was one line and Depp quickly went into a less whispy but very quirky syle of dialogue.

Again, I laughed quite a bit, my kids enjoyed themselves thoroughly and my wife gave it a thumbs up.

Rare, but all in family agree, this was actually worth the price of admission.

New Agreed, worth the price of admission
And more important, worth our rare night out without the kids. But how can you not see the Jacko-ness of it: pale, fey, fabulously wealthy, genius, socially retarded, unique sense of style, builds his own private fantasyland ... What does he need to do, take off one glove and grab his crotch?

New How much is actually reality grab
versus how the character needed to play to fit Burton's vision of the role?

Regardless, it had no impact past that initial gotcha to the story.

I missed the singing on the boat, though. One comparison old film to new that I thought Burton could have kept in without too much trouble. That was the part of the initial film where you really saw that Wonka had "issues".

New I don't think he was intentionally basing it on Jacko
But given the backstory he created, it's hard not to end up in a similar place.

What part of the original are you referring to that showed Wonka had issues?

New Oh, nevermind, the singing on the boat was the part
/me is a little slow this morning.

I guess Burton didn't need that, because it was already pretty clear he was "off".
