don't you _ever_ buy another thing.
ugh. moving is such a bear.
So, for my wife's birthday this year, we bought a house. No more renting for us (again, this is our 2nd house). It's an amazing amount of work to move a four bedroom house into another four bedroom house; even if it is only 1.5km away. The goal was to be fully out of the old place (belongs out and place cleaned) and have everything into the new place on Saturday. We almost made it--missed by 15 minutes. oh well. I can live with that. At 8:30 this morning (Tuesday), was the checkout inspection. So at 8:45 with the papers signed and cheques (checks to the USAians) in hand we were fully done with the old house. Yayyy.
The new place, while not exactly a fixer-upper is in need of some TLC and a make-over. We keep telling oursleves appearances are just cosmetic, but the more we look at it and talk about how we want to change it,... well it's a bit daunting. For now we're just trying to get settled, fix a bunch of smaller things and decide which major thing needs to get done first...
Have fun, Carl Forde

Moving sucks
When we moved into this place, I told the wife that I'm dying here, no more moving! :)
Congrats on the new place, tackle the projects a room at a time, that can help you focus and make the jobs seem less daunting.

Congrats!
Refinish one room per year. With a 4-BR house, that's about 9-10 rooms, all told (generally). At that rate, every decade, each room will get updated once. Don't try to tackle them all at once, you'll get burned out. I've refinished 4 rooms and both the upstairs and downstairs hallways here in the last 18 months. I don't recommend following in my footsteps.

Heh - I've said that to my wife at least a dozen times
this week. Packers come today - movers tomorrow - I've been tossing stuff out for 3 days. Bags and bags of crap we don't need.

My strategy
is to have movers put all boxes in garage.
Any unopened boxes at the end of a year can be hauled to the dump unopened. I've done this once before and it worked great.
Working on convincing wife of this plan though. She is much more stuff bound than I.

I've probably got all of those - - - somewhere.
My greatest triumph was about a year after departure of a former girlfriend who had insisted I move all my stuff out of the garage so her stuff could go in. A lot of it was still heaped into a mountain in the driveway with a tarp over it.
A client brought a failed Telex terminal to see if I could fix it. Bad power supply. I looked at the power supply and it seemed sort of familiar. I dove under the tarp with a flashlight and 10 minutes later everged with a brand new Telex power supply.
The client was impressed (well, so was I). Of course, until that time I hadn't a hint what it was except that it was a power supply and I bought it real cheap from a surplus store. I got good money for it.

One project at at time...
If you look at it all at once you'll get overwhelmed! I'm in the process of making cosmetic changes to every room in my house. Just did the bathroom and 2 bedrooms and the deck. Was power washing my garage in preparation for painting and blew a big hole in the side. Rotted wood. Now I have to fix that. It's always something.
I cant stand clutter. If I had to pack up and move it would be a breeze because I only keep what I use. If it hasnt been used in the last year off it goes to charity. Less stuff=less work.

we can't stand clutter either
and the kitchen floor is cluttered waiting for the cupboards to be cleaned properly. Sydney, my wife, refuses to use the storage area under the stairs for storing food, as the previous owner did. She wants her food in the kitchen, thank-you-very-much. So we're figuring out something with a couple of storage shelves until we can renovate the kitchen. The bathroom on the main floor is first on the gut it and rebuild parade.

I'm moving in a month and a half or so.
I sympathize. We bought a 4 bedroom house 20 years ago assuming 2 kids. No kids but all the (large) closets are filled with my wife's stuff. We are moving to a smaller ranch type house with a lot less storage space. I am dreading this.

Moving into ours wasn't all that bad, because John didn't have much stuff at the time, and all mine fit into about two rooms. But if we ever had to move now, Yikes....
Just packing up the 1500+ stuffed critters would be a job in itself!
I feel for anyone in the moving process, hang in there and take it one box or one room at a time!

So very true
My dog Sadie loves to chew the eyes off my daughter's stuffed animals and pull the stuffing out from the resulting holes. That, and chewing hands off action figures. My son got a bunch of Star Wars toys for his birthday last weekend. He left them on the floor. Gen. Grevious did not fare well. We call him Stumpy now.

Man, I would flip out if a dog ate any of my Star Wars stuff. Of course most of mine is older and more valuable. ;) The bird will nibble on one of my stuffed critters here or there but usually with no damage. Mostly the ones that have fluffy hair or something that are on my computer desk. Brenda Edit: Clarified the critters, not the Star Wars items. If my bird ever eats one of my Star Wars items, he'd better hope the Force is with him and I don't CATCH him!

I don't envy you that
it really is amazing the volume of stuff that a house collects. I think there's great opportunity in studying the force that attracts stuff to houses.
I think it was Carlin who said "home is where your stuff is". So what do you have if you get rid of a bunch of your stuff?? Is your house more of a home, the more stuff it has?? So it seems.

Moving is okay
I've moved a total of three times. Come next summer it'll be four. The first move was the biggest moving from the family home in the 'burbs of Trawnno out to the farer east shithole known as Ajax. Bleah. The only redeeming features were being a stone throw from Lake Ontario along with a good view. Fortunately my time out there was limited to four to five months. I got a taste of the train and subway commute from there to western Toronto and vowed never to do that again after I moved out. For that big move we got a big dumpster put on our driveway and my sister and I were tasked with chucking out all the useless shit my parents had acquired over the years. Lots and lots and lots of tacky '60s and '70s shit pulled up from the depths of the basement crawlspace. We filled that sucker up good! eBay wasn't around back then and a garage sale was out because I hate people, especially garage sale people. "Fuck you! No, it's $10. Read the tag! No I won't haggle. It's a coffee maker that's never been used. Fucking cheapskate!"
With my final move, for hopefully a long time, to my very own brand spanking new downtown condo, I've been slowly over the past year going through all the crap I have in my tiny apartment. Stuff being sold, stuff being chucked, papers read and either kept or shredded and some stuff being boxed up well ahead of time. I hate packing things at the last minute. You lose any organization and can't find stuff for weeks on end after a move.
I've helped move my sister twice, my dad twice, my mom twice, one friend three times and I expect a fourth move in the next few years, other friends a total of five times. Come the middle to end of June I'll be helping another friend move.
As long as there is good beer and I get fed a meal or two, I don't mind.
"Find out who your real friends are, move something!"
