New States get tough?
They want to require MS to make and sell more software
there's a real punishment for a software company

They want to require 'bundling' of Java with Win XP
So IE is not a part of the OS but an add on to the browser is a part of the OS

New Sun compliant Java I'd assume
So that more middleware can be written as cross-platform applications. Of course I don't know how well that would work in the end. I have my doubts about how many companies would take advantage of that option.

New Since when is java an add on to the browser?

To be sure, there's a part of java which is an add on (ie- the plugin), but java is a lot more than an add on to the browser.

In fact, most of the java I run here has nothing to do with a browser; in fact, I even run most applets outside of the browser as they use less memory and generally run faster when run with applet.exe.

The idea that java is only an adjunct to the browser is a particularly Windows way of looking at it, where everything and a ham sandwich gets tossed into a seamless whole. I prefer modularity in my systems...

New Modularity not needed.
Modularity was really only useful back in the "bad old days" when there was more than one software publisher. We wouldn't want to go back and deal with all that confusion again, would we?

New Re: Since when is java an add on to the browser?
That may be but what the states and others are upset about is that Win XP and IE6 do not include the JVM
This impacts for most users on Internet browsing and not much else hence my earlier comments
When I ran Win XP beta, I was prompted by the OS to download the JVM as soon as it was needed and it took 5 minutes on a slow conncection, obviously another sinister plot from Redmond
