Welcome to IWETHEY!

New So I installed Mepis.
It installed painlessly. It's apt-get UI is great. It's easy to configure. All is right with the world, except...

I can't figure out how to change the damn resolution.

Once upon a time there was a widget in the KDE control center that let you actually choose your resolution... and I can't help but think that widget is missing now. At least I *hope* it's missing -- if that's really 1280x1024 then I'm going to cry. Everything is so freaking HUGE! Why do they have to use 6 pixels when 2 pixels will work just as well?

Er... anyway. Compared to XP at 1280x1024, I feel like I'm working in 1024x768... which is what I hope is actually going on, but who knows? There's not resolution widget...

But other than that it's great. It detected *both* my motherboard sound card and my AudioPhile 24 bit card without any problem. Last time I tried to make that work I had to fiddle with ALSA settings in four config files... just to get the speakers to pop (nothing more).

Anyway. I'm quite pleased with it so far, except for the display resolution thing.

New kcontrol
The KDE control center.. Go to peripherals, then select display...

As for the con thing, try (from control center again) Appearance and themes, then Icons In the Advanced tab, you can adjust the sizes of the icons used in various places.

Enjoy!

New Grrrr
Peripherals/Display gives me a message "Your X server doe snot support resizing and rotating the display. Please update to version 4.3 or greater."

I am in fact running at 1024x768...

New Re: Grrrr
So I do, in fact, have 4.3 installed. And the specific application/applet/whatever it says I need (Resize and Rotate Extension, or RANDR) is also installed. So this is all very curious.

New OK, I think I know what the problem is.
My video card doesn't like my monitor. Or vice-versa. Or X hates them both.

I have an ATI Radeon 9600 video card. Not the greatest card in the world, but it works... in Windows XP anyway... when I use the Omega Drivers.

I have a Sony SDM-HS73/B 17" flat screen LCD monitor that can support resolutions up to 1280x1024. The resolution downgrade from my 19" CRT took some getting used to, but boy oh boy the extra desk space is nice!

When I installed Mepis it asked me if I wanted to use the X Radeon drivers or the "official AGI fglrx drivers." I thought "oh, gee, official -- that's nice." And chose that.

That's what's keeping the resolution controls from showing up in kcontrol -- when I switch to the Radeon drivers the resolution controls magically appear as though I had sprinkled pixie dust on the panel.

OK, so easy enough, right? Just use the Radeon drivers. Well... for some reason when I do XWindows doesn't believe my monitor can display 1280x1024. It caps out at 1024x768. And the Sony SDM-HS73/B is not listed in the MEPIS OS Center list of supported monitors -- I have to choose "Generic LCD 1280x1024" and then enter the vertical and HOrizontal information taken from Sony's specifications for the monitor (which are Vert 48-75 Hz, Horiz 28-80kHz). So I dutifully enter all that information, reload XWindows, and...

It still caps out at 1024x768. *sigh*

If I hooked up my old 19" CRT I could get the resolution I want. But I don't want to use that. I need the extra space on my desk. It's absolutely critical that I have another 3' square for my desk clutter. :)

Anyway... it seems that XWindows is unwilling to recognize the full extent of my monitor's capabilities. Any ideas on how to convince it to play nice?

New Don't use the settings.
With 'generic' for monitor... Try the 'generic' default settings and see how they look...

New Try...
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Unless it is some other package in Mephis. Answer the questions.

Restart X and see what happens.

And if you are willing to do a re-install again... DO try the Debian-Installer. It is fantastically better than anything that was there before. They have a TEAM working on it. Main reason -- complaints Debian wasn't very easy to install.

It is still textual install, mainly because it runs on 11 different platforms (actually 15 but that is another story).

It has got ump-teen translations, works very well indeed for most run of the Mill machines most Linux machines turn out being... Even does work on Newer motherboards and Video cards. Plus it has the 2.6 Kernel as an option rather than an experimental flavor. 2.4 is default.

You never know. Sarge *IS* shaping up very well, the longer they work on it.

New I managed to solve the problem.
It was very annoying, but it's done now. It will make an amusing post eventually, because right in the middle of cursing I wound up saying "cooooool" and then went right back to cursing. :)
