My video card doesn't like my monitor. Or vice-versa. Or X hates them both.
I have an ATI Radeon 9600 video card. Not the greatest card in the world, but it works... in Windows XP anyway... when I use the Omega Drivers.
I have a Sony SDM-HS73/B 17" flat screen LCD monitor that can support resolutions up to 1280x1024. The resolution downgrade from my 19" CRT took some getting used to, but boy oh boy the extra desk space is nice!
When I installed Mepis it asked me if I wanted to use the X Radeon drivers or the "official AGI fglrx drivers." I thought "oh, gee, official -- that's nice." And chose that.
That's what's keeping the resolution controls from showing up in kcontrol -- when I switch to the Radeon drivers the resolution controls magically appear as though I had sprinkled pixie dust on the panel.
OK, so easy enough, right? Just use the Radeon drivers. Well... for some reason when I do XWindows doesn't believe my monitor can display 1280x1024. It caps out at 1024x768. And the Sony SDM-HS73/B is not listed in the MEPIS OS Center list of supported monitors -- I have to choose "Generic LCD 1280x1024" and then enter the vertical and HOrizontal information taken from Sony's specifications for the monitor (which are Vert 48-75 Hz, Horiz 28-80kHz). So I dutifully enter all that information, reload XWindows, and...
It still caps out at 1024x768. *sigh*
If I hooked up my old 19" CRT I could get the resolution I want. But I don't want to use that. I need the extra space on my desk. It's absolutely critical that I have another 3' square for my desk clutter. :)
Anyway... it seems that XWindows is unwilling to recognize the full extent of my monitor's capabilities. Any ideas on how to convince it to play nice?
