I felt that way after reading the title. ;-)
Violent movies aren't my LRPD.

There are non-violent films?
I loved NBK, btw. I'm going to watch Kill Bill 1 & 2 back-to-back this weekend.
Films like Equilibrium, Desperado, Django, Hard Boiled—that's my idea of entertainment.

Yeah.
I tend to enjoy gentle films and comedies much more than, say, [link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103064/|T2] or [link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167261/|LotR:TT]. Not that I didn't get a bit of enjoyment from [link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060196/|tGtBatU] and similar films. And [link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/|Alien] was amazing, not least because of Giger's monster.
I enjoy the occasional "action" film, but so many of them have cartoon violence for its own sake and that rubs me the wrong way these days. For example, I was intrigued by the idea of [link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106856/|Falling Down], but when I tried to watch it recently it sickened me and I turned it off. I probably won't ever see [link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364961/|The Assassination of Richard Nixon] for the same reason. I doubt I'll ever see a Tarantino or a Stone movie by choice - they're just not for me.
[link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0319061/|Big Fish], [link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108550/|What's Eating Gilbert Grape], [link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107048/|Groundhog Day] and [link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0211915/|Amelie] were wonderful. I enjoyed [link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093754/|Repentance] very much as well.
I like escapism in movies much more than "excitement". To each their own. :-)
Cheers, Scott.

Falling Down was superb.
It's just about the only Michael Douglas film where his presence didn't make me want to put my boot through the telly.
As I age, I am becoming vehemently opposed to schmaltz and much more receptive to things like the last five minutes of Resident Evil - just as you think it's all over, Our Hero wakes up to find herself more-or-less the last person alive. And then, with a nod to Army Of Darkness, she pumps the shottie and prepares to kick more zombie arse[0].
There's a pervasive tendency in Hollywood to take a decent film and then lay it on so damn thick at the end that it makes you want to puke.
An example is a film of which I thoroughly enjoyed the first 90% - The Stepford Wives. I like Nicole Kidman when she's in her neurotic, dangerous and edgy mode, and even Bette Midler was good, but the last 10 minutes is awful; it is just about salvaged by the very end.
Films where all the beautiful, perfect, overpaid and yet oddly stupid people get it in the shorts are always that bit more satisfying. Starship Troopers does this excellently (and is a clever film in its own right, giant alien bugs notwithstanding).
Film comedy is almost always a bit of a dead duck for me. Firstly, I'm knackered because I'm British, and slapstick doesn't do it for me (although Bill & Ted were funny in a cleverly dumb way, unlike, say, Something About Wossername which was dumb in a not-funny and not-clever way); my idea of underpant-wettingly-funny[1] is The Office. Hollywood is NEVER going to make 100 minutes of THAT.
Romantic comedies make me lose the will to live. I watched Sliding Doors and Bridget Jones with SWMBO, and she thought they were fab and I just sat there, wondering if there was any way I could force myself to hallucinate that I was watching Blake's 7 reruns. Hugh Grant? Smug Git.
See, Office Space. Now there's a film that's bloody annoying. The first half is superb. TPS memos, staplers, Milton, it's all fab. Then it all goes pants, with love stories and silly embezzlement things and oh look it's all burned down.
[0]The award for "Best Zombie Film Ever" now goes to Shaun Of The Dead. [1]My favourite comedy programmes of all time are The Fast Show, The Day Today and Little Britain.

Cant handle all that macho crap.

Right-o
See Bullitt - don't need to know ever again that, people can chase people in cars. Seen Aliens - don't need any New monsters.
Yes, most 'films' I see are ancient, mostly not-Murican .. and involve the absurd range of homo-sap emotions and damn little of homo-sap-weaponry: for that one, merely Fail Safe and Dr. Strangelove have already covered the drill. Ditto Matrix and other transistorized stuff, especially if they have lots of lectric guitars. Hollywood hates moi. I trust.

I've seen Citizen Kane.
Don't need to see any more films.
Silly attitude, Ash, and snobbish to boot.

Another film with too much "action" was Van Helsing.
Which was a shame because the story elements were somewhat thoughtfully implemented. Now that I think about it, it was a bit DiscWorld-ish in it's execution but by someone who decided to pinch a whole heap of mythology instead of properly twisting their own and who was also not that good a writer. It's possible I'm remembering it as better than it was.
